Rowan University is a public comprehensive state-designated research institution with approximately 17,300 students. The Achieving Success through Collaboration, Engagement and Determination (ASCEND) program is an educational pipeline scholarship program for first generation, underrepresented, and/or low income students which utilizes a series of intentional programming to support students in the program. Within the ASCEND program there are two components: the Educational Opportunity Fund Program (EOF) and the RISE Program. Under the supervision of the Director of ASCEND, the Assistant Director/Counselor of EOF, provides financial, personal, and career counseling to students enrolled in the ASCEND program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Provides academic and personal counseling to caseload of EOF students. • Develops programs and services to enhance the academic performance of EOF students. • Conducts regularly scheduled counseling appointments with students and monitors program compliance. • Monitors academic progress of caseload and identifies students not making satisfactory progress and provides strategies and resources to students at risk. • Refers students to appropriate resources both on and off campus. • Assist with recruitment efforts for admission of students to ASCEND summer bridge program. • Assists with the coordination of open house events and admission receptions for prospective EOF students. • Assists with coordination of programs and activities for the ASCEND summer bridge program. • Participates in workshops, conferences, and training sessions which will aid in meeting job duties and improving support services to students. • Provides assistance to Director of ASCEND with collecting, analyzing, and reporting data results. • Coordinates alumni relations activities and maintains database of EOF student alumni. • Maintains written and electronic counseling notes on student progress and goals. • Participates and attends University and student events on campus. • Serves on committees on campus and off campus. • Remains informed of all academic policies of the university. • Maintains a working knowledge of all types of financial aid available to students, and the rules and regulations governing them. • Provides assistance to students and parents in completing financial aid forms and navigating the financial aid process. • Acts as a student advocate. • Assists with supervision and training of student workers. • Participates in activities relating to the EOF student transfer process. • Keeps abreast of technology that will enhance services to students. • Any other related duties as directed by the Program Director.
Education: Master’s Degree in counseling, educational administration, student personnel, or related area.
Experience: Minimum three years’ experience working with diverse students, specifically, underrepresented/underserved populations
Core Competencies: • Strong interpersonal, analytical and organization skills; and conflict resolution skills. • Excellent oral and written communication skills and expertise in budget development and management. • Ability to build cross functional alliances and train personnel in proper procedures and policies.
Skills and Abilities: Technology: Working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Power Point, e-mail, discipline related software, and internet.
Language Skills: Ability to communicate effectively and interact tactfully with all levels of the college staff, students, and trustees; read, analyze, and interpret documents, budgets and contracts; and, respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
Reasoning Skills: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
