Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 2 to perform complex functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct a portion of the research project(s). The LSRP2 will work in the Gene Vector and Virus Core (GVVC) facility, a University Service Center. The GVVC produces recombinant viruses for research use by labs around the world but primarily for Stanford neuroscience labs. In addition, the GVVC provides a variety of services related to virus production such as plasmid construction and viral titration assays.
This position requires a four-year degree (molecular biology or virology) or related field and a minimum of three years of experience. In addition, the LSRP2 should be capable of independently performing all phases of lab work involved in the production of viral vectors which includes the construction, production, and characterization of plasmid vectors used to produce recombinant viruses, production of viruses by transient transfection, purification of viruses using ultracentrifugation or chromatography, characterization of virus concentration by Q-PCR or infection of cells, and setting up new technologies as customers request them. The GVVC is currently producing AAVs, lentiviruses, and retroviruses, but will be producing others in the future.
The job will require someone who is meticulous, highly organized, can multitask, works efficiently and independently, can prioritize projects, and can effectively interact with a large number of diverse customers.
In addition, the candidate will be responsible for maintaining the lab and complying with government and University health and safety policies and regulations, especially with respect to biohazardous materials. Extensive experience with cell culture, transient transfections and knowledge of Microsoft Office is required. Plasmid construction, and centrifugation experience is a must.
MA/MS Molecular Biology and five plus years desired. In addition, extensive experience with transient transfection of 293 cells, production of recombinant viruses, and fluorescence microscopy is required. Knowledge of sequence analysis software is also preferred. Knowledge in the areas of neurobiology, optogenetics or virology is a bonus.
Perform complex (lab and/or field) experiments for a major portion of the research project. Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist. Based on prior results, contribute to development of new research protocols and procedures or adaptation of existing protocols.
Make recommendations on plan design and/or research direction to principal investigator.
Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; present findings for lab work group.
Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section. May contribute to publication of findings and present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as technical resource for other research staff.
Perform general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May assist with purchasing laboratory equipment.

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and three years of related experience, or Master's degree.
