The Office of External Affairs includes Communications and Marketing, Development and Constituent Relations and Finance and Administration.
The award-winning Communications and Marketing team provides strategic communications, external and internal communications, and marketing services for the School across a variety of digital and print platforms. This includes brand and identity management, digital strategies and web services, editorial and content strategies, visual communication, media and public relations, social media and integrated marketing campaigns.
Global Health NOW (https://www.globalhealthnow.org/) is a digital publication including a news website, social media and a weekday e-newsletter of essential news and views for the global health community. The e-newsletter aggregates the most important global health articles and reaches tens of thousands of global health leaders, researchers and professionals working in philanthropy, government and civil society as well as students and interested lay people. GHN also publishes original content (https://www.globalhealthnow.org/topics/ghn-exclusive) on its website including news articles, Q&As and commentaries by and about thought leaders in global health.

The news writer is a key member of the team that produces Global Health NOW, a digital news initiative that includes a website, social media and a weekday e-newsletter serving the global health community. Global Health NOW is produced by the award-winning Communications and Marketing team in the Office of External Affairs at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
The writer will help produce on deadline the weekday Global Health NOW e-newsletter that reaches tens of thousands of subscribers worldwide. The writer's responsibilities may include: crafting short summaries of news articles, finding important global health news articles to include in the daily e-newsletter, proofing summaries, and formatting and sending the e-newsletter by 8 a.m. ET Monday through Friday. The writer will provide other editorial help as needed.
This is a part-time, casual position that requires three hours of early morning work each weekday. The writer will work from home or at an offsite location. The best candidates for the job will have a passion for news and global health, strong news judgment, excellent deadline writing and journalism skills, and an enthusiastic, can-do attitude.
The writer reports to Global Health NOW's Associate Editor.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Search, prioritize and summarize global health articles in news sites, websites, journals, blogs, and social media.
Craft concise, well-written summaries of the day's most important articles under strict deadline.
Assist in proofreading, fact-checking and editing summaries.
Place, format and link summaries using MailChimp, an online email service.
Compile and schedule the "best of the week" e-newsletter.
Perform occasional original reporting and news writing.
Reliably work planned hours: 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., Monday through Friday.
Other duties as assigned (which may include searching and sizing for photos, etc.).
Note: The writer is expected to provide his or her own computer, phone, and reliable high-speed Internet access.
Two years related experience. Writing samples may be required.
This is a telecommute position.
Direct experience editing and producing publications with daily deadlines.
Ability to quickly summarize key facts and proofread text to remove errors.
Ability to write quickly and on deadline in an engaging, informative and accurate manner.
Ability to learn and use new software and technology such as the email service MailChimp.
Experience in writing articles.
