TheInternational Student Advisor (ISA) helps toensure legal compliance for Yeshiva University's undergraduate and graduate international students, scholars and visiting professors; assists new students and scholars with the immigration process to start school in the US; maintains immigration information for all incoming, continuing and recently graduated students and scholars in the SEVIS immigration system; participates in programs and events that assists students in assimilating and complying with USA customs and laws. The international advisor interfaces with the Deans of all graduate schools and academic departments, human resources, admissions, student finance and student accounts, registrar, the Provost office, general counsel, student housing, academic advisement as well as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency and the Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) office. The advisor works closely with the director in issuing documents and maintaining all legal requirements for international students and scholars as the Designated School Official with DHS.
Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for Yeshiva University schools including Azrieli, Bernard Revel, Cardozo School of Law, Katz, Wurzwieler, Ferkauf Graduate School, Yeshiva College, Sy Syms School of Business and Stern College; ensuring compliance with any and all government regulations regarding international students
Serve as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for Yeshiva University Schools & Museum ensuring compliance with any and all government regulations regarding international exchange visitors and professors: 8CFR214.2(J)
Facilitate preparation and disbursement of SEVIS I-20 forms to allow new international students to contact U.S. Embassies in their respective home countries and apply for a visa to enter the county
Facilitate preparation and disbursement of SEVIS DS-2019 forms to allow Exchange Visitors, Scholars and Professors to contact the U.S Embassies in their respective home countries and apply for a visa to enter the country
Officially evaluate legal student status and approve all immigration applications for student changes and updates (examples: Transfer procedures, change of status, legal DHS (Department of Homeland Security) reinstatement procedures, extension of stay)
Monitor international students' academic progress in order to comply with current and new DHS regulations and tracking system (SEVIS) compliance
Determine eligibility for work authorization for paid academic internships in the US, optional practical training (OPT) which is work authorization after students complete a YU degree and facilitate the recommendation of individual student applications to DHS for the necessary work permit
Works with director around necessary intervention with DHS on behalf of international students should problems arise with applications
Helps to complete all U.S. government forms, file reports as required and complete student tracking as required by DHS
Assist with information orientations for new and transfer international students each semester, providing current regulation information
Maintain DHS files on each international student, as appropriate
Direct students to appropriate services on or off campus as needed
Assist with extra-curricular activities and guidance that will enhance the personal and academic well-being of the international student body
Advise other institutional offices such as Admissions, Registrar, Student Finance and Human Resources on federal and other rules and regulations affecting international students
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors to maintain operations and services
Experience and Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree required, Master preferred and minimum of two years of experience working as a DSO and/or ARO in a University setting
By law, U.S. citizenship or a lawful permanent resident of the United States, is required for DSO/ARO
Immigration training in F and/or J regulations, with NAFSA or another professional organization, strongly preferred
Experience living abroad and fluency in a second language preferred
Skills and Competencies:
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
Knowledge of laws governing F students, J exchange visitors, etc.
Knowledge of SEVIS immigration tracking system
Knowledge of Banner or other student information systems
Cultural competency related to international and religiously diverse populations
