AREA AND FUNCTION: Under the supervision of the Dean of Student Affairs, or designee the Director - Athletics/Physical Education Building (PEB) has administrative responsibility over the Physical Education Building and Department of Athletics.
CHARACTERISTICS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees the operation of the Physical Education Building. Establishes guidelines and procedures for the use of the facility. Works cooperatively with Auxiliary Services and Facilities Management to facilitate activities in the Physical Education Building.
Oversees Athletic department’s policies and procedures. Establishes and implements regulations, guidelines and procedures for the effective administration of the institution’s intercollegiate sports programs within the boundaries of the institution’s sports policy.
Responsible for the efficient development and management of the department’s budget.
Develops and implements comprehensive recruitment programs for coaches to ensure compliance with the regulatory governing bodies.
Plans, develops and implements rules and regulations in accordance with regulatory legislation and procedural guidelines of the National Junior College Athletic Association, Region XIX (NJCAA) and Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) or other affiliates.
Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training and evaluating the Athletic and Physical Education Building and departmental staff.
Ensure the enforcement of the department code-of-conduct for student athletes and coaching staff.
Conducts workouts for athletic teams and prepares athletic teams for competition with other institutions.
Responsible for developing an effective academic monitoring plans ensuring institutional and NJACC, GSAC guidelines.
Oversees, establishes and implements regulations, guidelines and procedures for the effective administration of the institution’s intercollegiate sports programs within the boundaries of the institutions sports policy.
Supervises the scheduling of the college’s athletic teams, selects and arranges intercollegiate sporting officials for scheduled competitions, and coordinates transportation requirements of intercollegiate and intramural sports teams.
Coordinates publicity for athletic teams, including maintaining liaison with local news media and Athletic department website to ensure maximum exposure for athletic programs.
Monitors the purchases and inventory of athletic equipment used by athletic teams.
Serves as the college representative for NJCAA and GSAC meetings and chair of ECC Athletic Advisory Council.
Prepares statistical, financial and other reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
Provide exceptional leadership and direction to staff and students; which includes coaching, development, mentoring, training and leading by example.
The Director will be expected to cultivate and maintain relationships with staff, students and alumni; as well as community and other learning institutions.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of college coaching and athletics.
Demonstrated experience in college administration, policies and practices.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with college employees and in providing quality customer service.
Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in Physical Education, recreation, health, or other related area.
Title IX Certification and/or knowledge/experience with regulations.
Five or more years of experience coaching college athletic teams.
Five or more years experience in college administration, especially with athletic programs.
