Position Specific Summary:
This position reports to the Director of Student Health and Wellness (SHW), a unit in the Division of Student Life. Major responsibilities include: (1) direct patient care to University of Iowa students; (2) supervision of and consultation to direct reports who support the day-to-day delivery of health care and services, including six staff physicians, gynecologist, three physician assistants, one lab director, a nurse manager, and two psychiatrists; (3) participation in budget planning, preparation and monitoring of resources; (4) leadership of quality improvement functions, including monitoring all activity related to the quality of care delivered, providing clinical expertise in support of the various quality assurance programs and activities, and accreditation standards; (5) professional staff credentialing, privileging, professional development; and (6) consulting as required on health related issues on campus.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND SPECIFIC JOB TASKS
Provision of Medical/ Collaboration with Care Team- Perform/order medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures/counseling, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications. Consult/collaborate with other care team members. Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues. Influence others to adopt best practices.
Documents patient medications, diagnoses, treatment plans, medical procedures and results.
Signs all Nurse Care and Outreach orders and reviews all NCR and Outreach lab results on EPIC.
Leads clinical performance expectations that support the goals of consistent clinical performance and practice standards within the clinic to ensure superior clinical outcomes and unparalleled patient experience.
Recommends to licensed health care providers or guides others in the selection of treatments, patient care techniques or patient education in an effort to improve clinical performance.
Partners and collaborates with medical staff and management, facilitating teamwork and shared goals. Representing medical staff viewpoints to management and relaying management viewpoints to medical staff by establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships.
Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession and Education-Complete patient medical records, reports, and forms to record treatment for treatment record and billing purposes. Improve quality of care by performing chart reviews and participating on performance improvement committees.
Provides recommendations in the development and/or revision of the clinic policies and procedures.
Corrects errors in medical charts and records according to organizational policies and guidelines.
Manages diverse problems in various health care policy compliance situations.
Demonstrates best practices when dealing with complex legal/ethical situations.
Education/ Health/ Promotion/ Research-Provide health education to patients and medical education to health professions students and residents. Through health promotion maximize student learning, retention and success
Analyzes patterns and identifies key areas for improvement of counseling results.
Counsels one or several patients or family members on a specific health subject area.
Leads educational sessions and provide ongoing in-service to medical staff regarding clinical resource management, appropriate documents standards, utilization and quality issues, and quality improvement activities in collaboration with other SH&W leadership.
Administration/ Human Resources Management-Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications. Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations.
Establishes and maintains credibility and is able to influence individuals inside and outside own group and earns their respect.
Participates actively on the management and administrative councils.
Represent Student Health & Wellness at the Orientation information fairs and at the biweekly UIHC-HIM meeting.
Assists in the communication and implementation of planned changes.
Supervises medical staff and gives continuing feedback, recognizes achievement, and recommends improvement.
Adjusts and communicates performance objectives as necessary for team objectives.
Defines and agrees upon performance goals and objectives.
Identifies performance problem areas early on and defines specific improvement activities.
Communicates effectively with diverse audiences, using appropriate media and language; ensures important messages are clearly understood.

Degree of Doctor of Medicine from an accredited medical school and licensed to practice medicine in the State of Iowa.
Minimum 5 years of professional clinical experience exclusive of internship and residency in the practice of medicine.
Minimum 3 years of professional administrative experience in an ambulatory, medical group, healthcare setting.
General knowledge of the requirements and application of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Knowledge of medical records security and regulations and patient care documentation standards.
Demonstrated skill in problem solving and mediation among competing influences.
Interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse body of students, staff, providers, administrators and members of the community. Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment.
Evidence of innovation in service delivery, a strong commitment to the mission for student health, and knowledge of public health and wellness related issues affecting universities and their student populations.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic objectives, motivate and develop medical and clinical administrative staff, effectively manage resources, and cultivate strong collaborative relationships with multiple constituent groups.
Board certification in Family Medicine or other specialty as recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or equivalent training and/or experience (certification must be maintained during the tenure as Medical Director). Qualifications needed to successfully complete credentialing and privileging.
Knowledge of the issues in delivery of healthcare to late adolescents and young adults (experience working with a college age population preferred)
Experience working in a university level college health center operation
Experience managing credentialing procedures and operating within a medical governance structure
Experience with use of electronic health records in charting and documentation
