The Division: CSUSB is made up of five administrative divisions. The Division of University Advancement promotes Cal State San Bernardino's educational mission through private philanthropic support, strategic communications, and alumni relations. University Development creates fundraising initiatives, events, and activities that stimulate the involvement and interest of alumni, friends, parents, corporations, and foundations by developing relationships that foster and stimulate giving to the university.
Position Description: The Director of Alumni Relations oversees the operations and programs of the Office of Alumni Relations in their entirety, including the CSUSB Alumni Association and the Student Ambassadors Society. The director plans and implements programming and projects that strategically engage alumni in strengthening the university and supporting its current and future students. This position serves as a key member of the University Advancement leadership team, promoting collaboration of the Office of Alumni Relations with all components of the division, including Development, Strategic Communication, and Annual Giving. The director manages professional and student staff in daily operations and team projects and facilitates recruitment, training, and evaluation of staff. The director is responsible for the preparation, monitoring, updating and evaluation of annual business plan and budget. The director serves as a key partner in cultivating a diverse alumni volunteer network to help maximize outreach and build the pipeline for philanthropic support to the university and manages the initial steps of the alumni cultivation and solicitation strategy as part of the University Advancement division.
Identifies alumni leaders for key board roles and nominates alumni for various regional awards. The director works collaboratively with Advancement Services to continually improve the integrity of the alumni database.
Works collaboratively with office staff, Advancement staff, and college staff to plan and implement events intended to increase awareness of and engagement through the Alumni Association.
Work with the division's advancement services office as well as prospect management and research office to consistently ensure the freshness, correctness, and security of the advancement database, along with prospect, donor and alumni records.
Conceptualize and implement an overall communications strategy, using the approved CSUSB brand platform, targeted at informing alumni of university developments and involvement opportunities as well as educating current students on what it will mean to be active and contributing CSUSB alumni and oversees the development, maintenance and coordination of the Alumni Association's online presence.
Conceptualize and implement signature university events designed to celebrate and cultivate alumni.
Design and implement a sustained program of career assistance, including online career webinars, workshops, alumni panel discussions, and ongoing networking events for alumni and students, in collaboration with the Career Center and various campus colleges and department.
Work in concert with development officers, ensuring that prospective and current alumni donors are engaged in college and university affairs.
Works collaboratively with development leadership to create and implement an aligned strategy to engage prospective alumni donors and move them toward giving.
Support the university's graduation and student success initiatives, designed to increase student participation and engagement, so as to advance improved advising and retention, increasing student development opportunities, expand access to vital technologies and career placement.
Establish and foster positive relationships with alumni, current students, campus partners, and community leaders to advance the university.
Provides leadership, direction, and support to the CSUSB Alumni Association and its chapters/networks.
Provides direction in developing and implementing campus-approved fundraising events undertaken by the Office of Alumni Relations, the CSUSB Alumni Association and its chapters/networks, ensuring that the university adheres to all state, CSU system and university policies governing procurement, alumni associations, and fundraising.
Represents the university and Alumni Association at various campus, regional, and national events.
Collaborate with the Office of Strategic Communication to market alumni programs, using the approved CSUSB brand platform, through publications, fund-raising events, stewardship, and donor recognition activities to both on-campus and off-campus constituents to improve awareness and expanded support.
In collaboration with development officers, personally visit with prospective alumni donors, create and manage appropriate relationships and stewardship for select alumni donors with specific faculty, staff, students and alumni.
Compose documents such as grant applications, case statements, contact and technical reports.
Possess the ability to develop, organize and carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instruction.
Stay abreast of best practices and alumni relations trends nationally and within the CSU system.
Bachelor's degree, preferably in marketing, communications, public relations, education or a related field.
Three or more years of successful professional experience working in student services and/or alumni relations.
Demonstrated experience working closely with development colleagues and front line fundraisers.
Demonstrated experience recruiting, motivating, training and managing volunteers that resulted in successful outcomes for both volunteers and the organization.
Strong interpersonal skills and be able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with alumni, students, faculty, staff and campus partners.
Must be able to exercise sound judgment and discretion while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
Must be able to reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems for one or several program areas.
Demonstrated ability to operate with a high degree of independence, judgment, consistency, and discretion. Applicants must be able to work as part of a dynamic team in a service-oriented, fast-paced environment.
Strong organizational, written and oral communication skills, as well as marketing and public relations skills. The ability to set priorities and achieve timely progress toward goals is essential. Applicants must possess initiative, be detailed-oriented, creative, efficient and able to handle diversified tasks concurrently.
Applicants must have the ability to travel, as well as work evenings and weekends.
Experience with development and research databases such as Advance, Raiser's Edge, Reeher, and/or Foundation Directory strongly preferred.
Advanced degree preferred. Experience working in a higher education setting desired.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. A working knowledge of Advance and PeopleSoft systems.
Valid driver's license and private automobile with required insurance.
