Coordinate coverage of governmental and policy actions and trends affecting the global chemistry enterprise. Work with writers, both staff and freelance, to develop stories based on those developments and events.
Work with writers to ensure a regular schedule of influential and engaging feature and news stories for all of C&EN’s channels.
Coordinate and edit weekly news and feature stories. Oversee the curation and production of 1-2 print Policy Concentrates pages each week.
Manage a group of three staff policy writers to ensure they continue to grow and develop as modern, multimedia journalists.
Nurture a global network of talented freelance writers sufficient to give C&EN readers a global view of governmental and policy actions and trends affecting the chemistry enterprise.
Work with other editors to ensure effective and efficient coverage of stories that cut across business, policy, science, and ACS news areas.
Identify opportunities to promote C&EN’s coverage of government and policy via C&EN’s homepage, social channels, newsletter, and other means.
Participate in weekly and monthly planning meetings and helps set editorial direction for the magazine.
Strong editorial judgment, attention to detail, storytelling, and oral communication skills.
Experience developing and shaping powerful, engaging, and accurate stories that resonate with a sophisticated scientific audience.
Ability to conceive, describe, and assign a range of multiplatform storyforms, including articles, interactive infographics, data stories, personal profiles, quizzes, video, and more.
Experience building and leveraging a global network of freelance writers.
The ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, high-stakes environment with limited supervision.
Knowledge of the latest social media platforms updates and capabilities and how to use them to engage with C&EN’s audiences.
Knowledge of SEO and social media best practices.
A college degree in chemistry or a related scientific field is required; education in journalism is highly desirable.
7+ years’ experience in writing and editing for a broad, technically trained audience is required.
Proven skill in assigning, editing, and creating digital news, features, and multimedia.
Demonstrated management skills, excellent written and oral communications skills, and the ability to handle multiple projects at once and meet overlapping deadlines are required.
