The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra (BSO) seeks a part-time (0.55 FTE) executive director to work in partnership with a volunteer board of directors to achieve the BSO’s mission to enrich and educate musicians and audiences of northern Minnesota through innovative orchestral experiences. The executive director is directly involved in administration, finances, planning, marketing, database management, and grants writing. Open until filled.
Qualities of the successful candidate:
Exhibit a high level of integrity; value cooperation and process-based decision making.
Have experience in successful nonprofit governance and/or management.
Have demonstrated success in grant writing.
Possess superior communication skills, including writing, listening, and speaking.
Be highly self-directed; skilled at organization, multi-tasking, and workload prioritization.
Know (or be able to quickly learn) the Mac OS system.
Minimum of Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Attend monthly BSO board meetings.
Provide leadership on issues of structure, development, planning, budgeting, procedures, and policies.
Cultivate a collaborative, productive working relationship with board members and with music director.
Maintain/update Filemaker Pro database with information on ticket sales, ad sales, and donations.
Work with treasurer to develop annual budget; keep finance records; attest, authorize, submit requests for payments.
Serve as Authorizing Official on contracts.
Work with grant committee to write/edit grants and grant budgets; monitor projects; write final reports.
Understand and comply with local/state/federal laws, statutes, rules and regulations.
Assist committee with annual gala fundraiser.
Work with graphic designer; manage marketing/publicity; make content updates to web.
Work with BSO independent contractors: Fundraising coordinator, Personnel Manager, Librarian, Stage Manager and others.
In consultation with music director, negotiate with guest artists on fees and stipends. Ensure guest artists have needs met and have a positive experience with the BSO.
Assist with tasks before and after concerts.
Maintain office hours; handle public inquiries; retrieve/process voicemail, email, and USPS mail.
Update and maintain annual activity calendar and board manual.
Manage office space, equipment, supplies, and filing/archives.
Other duties as assigned.
Additional Salary Information: Starting salary 18,000 - 20,000. No benefits.
Now in its 79th year, the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra is an accomplished and vibrant 501(C)3 community orchestra serving northcentral Minnesota. It is committed to the performance of music of rigorous artistic quality, placing a high value on its enthusiasm in exploring diverse music and featuring exceptional guest artists. It performs six subscription concerts and a summer pops concert each season, as well as a biennial youth concert.
