Our HIM CODING department has an outstanding opportunity for a full time CDS CODER - TRAINEE.
Under direct supervision of the UWMC/HMC Clinical Data Specialist Coding Supervisor, the CLINICAL DATA SPECIALIST (CDS) CODER TRAINEE will code UWMC and HMC outpatient facility medical records using the ICD, CPT and/or APC coding systems. Use various health information databases such as Epic Hospital Billing, E-Code, EpicCare, and Cerner electronic record systems.
Code outpatient facility records for the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) and Harborview Medical Center (HMC)Health Information Management department using International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Ambulatory Procedure Code (APC) coding for patient health records. ICD and CPT coding of medical records.
Entering and verifying assigned codes into the Epic Hospital Billing (HB) system, the 3M Encompass 360 encoding system, or the E-Code system.
Review APC claims for accuracy of codes and modifiers in Epic HB.
Using various electronic medical records systems to review documentation and apply appropriate codes based on that documentation. Systems include EpicCare, Mindscape, and Cerner.
Perform related duties as required.
The CLINICAL DATA SPECIALIST CODER TRAINEE demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights. Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form which may jeopardize the privacy of patients. Accesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes.
In addition, the CLINICAL DATA SPECIALIST CODER TRAINEE demonstrates knowledge and understanding of and maintains confidentiality of employee information and medical center strategic plans and initiatives, financial information or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form which may jeopardize employee rights or organizations operations. Accesses and uses the minimum necessary employee and organization information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes.
This position will ultimately be located at HMC Pat Steel Building in the Health Information Management Department just east of the main Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. However, training for this position will be facilitated by HRG Consulting and will occur offsite at a Renton location for a period of 90 to 120 days.
REQUIREMENTS: Certified or eligible for certification within one year of hire as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Analyst (RHIA) OR equivalent education/experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Trainee candidates will complete a skills and knowledge assessment as part of the interview process. Successful trainee candidates must be able to attend the UW Medicine Coding Training Program facilitated by HRG Consulting at their offsite Renton location for maximum of 90 to 120 days.
