The City’s first Diversity and Equity Manager will lead the City’s efforts to ensure that all people have access to the opportunities necessary to satisfy their essential needs, advance their well-being, and achieve their full potential.
Serving in the City Manager’s office and reporting to the City Manager, the Diversity and Equity Manager serves as the primary subject matter expert for the City’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and takes the lead in identifying, developing, implementing and evaluating such initiatives. The position serves as the expert technical advisor on City-wide matters of equity and disparity. This position’s principal focus will be serving as the City of Sacramento’s outward face to the under-served and under-represented stakeholders with a focus on policy and community engagement. The Diversity and Equity Manager will be a proactive relationship builder with a strategic mindset to develop policies and processes to optimize the abilities for these under-served organizations and agencies to more effectively engage with City government.
A Bachelor’s degree in sociology, education, public administration, ethnic studies, communication or a closely related field and at least five years of demonstrated success in the administration of diversity and inclusion programs, community, government, educational or social justice programs are required. A Master’s degree or other advanced degree in a related field is highly desirable. Candidates with governmental and/or private sector experience are encouraged to apply. In-depth knowledge and experience should include the areas of theory and practice of diversity and equity issues in policy development, identity development, disadvantaged business enterprise initiatives and access and equity.
