The Grants/Communications Manager leads the grants program and collaborates in creating and cultivating solicitations and stewardship strategies for foundations and other funding agencies. In conjunction with the Director of Development, the Manager creates new fundraising initiatives from institutions and ensures that the development team is creative and innovative in its fundraising. The Manager will have an eye for design, will be a talented writer and serve as ‘wordsmith’ for the development team. The Grants/Communication Manager also develops new communications and marketing campaigns and is responsible for Facing Forwards’ social media.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Foundations/Government/Grants (60% of the time)
Collaborate to develop new initiatives to expand funder base and diversity.
In conjunction with the Director of Development, cultivate, solicit and steward funders, other funding sources, and/or government agencies. Will be part of the team that represents Facing Forward to the foundation community to increase the agency’s profile in both the funders and nonprofit environments
Develop an actionable annual grants management and tracking plan with quantifiable quarterly goals in a way that will guide and support the efforts of the development team:
Track progress towards quantifiable goals and make adjustments as necessary.
Write and submit LOIs, proposals, budgets reports, and associated documents. Ensure compliance with grant commitments.
Manage the grant tracking calendar to ensure timely completion of LOIs, proposals and reports
Identify, research, and evaluate potential foundation, corporate funders, and government prospects
Coordinate and attend site visits with prospective and current and funders
Create and monitor the grants income budget. Monitor grant revenue projections and goals and share results with leadership. Prepare financial documents as needed. Ensure project/program budgets for which funding is sought are accurate. Work closely and collegially with the finance department and program team.
Keep apprised of programmatic needs, new program developments, and outcomes by communicating regularly with program team.
Collect and maintain evaluative anecdotal data from the program to assist with LOIs, proposals and reports.
Work to actively engage with Board members to leverage foundation and corporate connections. Provide staff support and/or research as requested – what does this mean?
Remain informed of relevant changes and trends in the philanthropic sector and communicate this information to senior staff.
Communications (25% of the time)
Serve as an articulate, passionate, and visible spokesperson for Facing Forward and as a prominent face throughout the organization, among stakeholders, and in the Chicago community
Ensure that Facing Forward’s messaging to donors, funders, and prospects is consistent across all channels; ensure that Facing Forward’s case for support conveys the overall brand and mission and elevates the organization’s profile
Working with the Executive Director and Director of Development, create actionable annual communications and social media plan, with quantifiable quarterly goals
Coordinates the planning and producing of development publications including but not limited to e-newsletters and an annual report
Create and monitor the communications and publications budget
Liaise with website vendors and manage day-to-day website maintenance and updates, editing and writing posts, managing the blog schedule, creating social media posts, and developing regular e-communications
Write press releases and write and submit articles on behalf of the Executive Director. Track press, media, and social media.
Maintain updated media database.
Research and create materials for external speaking engagements
Special Events (10% of the time)
Within collaboration with the Director of Development and the Board, create corporate sponsorship and table sales prospect list for the annual event and coordinate sponsor benefits. In conjunction with the development team, track corporate sponsorship and table goals
Create program book content and other event-related communication materials.
Administration and Other (5%)
Actively participate in staff meetings
Understand the importance of confidentiality within the context of their work
Update professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading relevant publications; maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations
Maintain relationships with funder communities such as Forefront
Perform other duties as assigned

Five years’ of successful grant writing and communications experience, preferably with a social service organization that provides direct services
Proven ability to manage and enhance a portfolio of foundation funders
Responsible for securing $750,000 in grants from a diverse base of funders
Familiarity with foundation and corporate funders in Chicago’s philanthropic community
Familiarity with government funders helpful ((HUD, IL DHS, DFSS)
Skills and Abilities
Excellence in Microsoft Office, Publisher, InDesign (or other graphics software), Foundation Source (or other foundation research), and donor database skills
Love of the written word. Superior writing skills and ability to write for different types of audiences
Familiarity with researching and analyzing data
Experience with, and preference for, working in a growing development department
Special events experience helpful
Previous experience supporting a Board of Directors and working with volunteers helpful
Excellent verbal communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills
Outstanding ability to multi-task and prioritize projects
Exemplary time management skills required
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Work is normally performed in a typical office work environment. Sitting for extended periods is required. Intermittent physical activity including standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to 40 pounds). Normal manual dexterity and hand-eye-coordination corrected hearing and vision to normal range, verbal communication is required. Workplace is a smoke- and drug-free environment
Work week is generally 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, but evening and weekend work is required for events and meetings
