The Police Officer, certified as a Special Police Officer (SPO) or University Special Police Officer (USPO) under DC Municipal Regulations, provides a safe and secure environment to all members of the American University Community. The Police Officer, through mobile patrol and fixed posts, provides law enforcement services and emergency response on all University property. The Police Officer, reporting to a Shift Supervisor, writes incident reports, conducts preliminary investigations, promotes crime prevention efforts and utilizes their arrest authority.
The incumbent must successfully complete a reference check, medical examination, psychological examination, criminal background check and drug screening.
The Police Officer is designated as an “Essential” employee under American University policy. The Police Officer will be required to work regardless of weather or natural/manmade disaster, and is subject to call-out.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Must be a United States Citizen or eligible to work in the United States at time of application
Must be at least 21 years of age
Must possess a valid driver's license and obtain university driving privileges
Pass a police officer writing assessment, medical/physical examination and drug screening
Must not have been convicted of a felony crime; Must not have plead “nolo contendere”, or guilty or been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, false statements, perjury, or domestic violence.
If currently employed in any law enforcement position, must not be currently under internal investigation(s)
Must be released or discharged from the armed forces under conditions other than dishonorable
Possess or be able to obtain certification at recognized law enforcement training academy or equivalent
Must be able to complete all required university police training, including certification in Arrest Control Tactics, PR-24 Baton, Expandable Baton, and Oleoresin Capsicum Aerosol (Pepper Spray) Training
Must possess high level verbal and written skills
One (1) year of customer service related experience
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population
Must possess a working knowledge of computer skills and telecommunications equipment
Must be able to use word-processing software, e-mail, electronic forms and the Internet
Law enforcement officer certification from a federal, state, local or campus law enforcement agency/academy
The completion of a minimum of 30 post-secondary education credits or the equivalent in experience or training
One (1) year of law enforcement, military or security experience
Experience working in a dispatch or alarm monitoring center
