Denver Water is seeking a qualified candidate to join our tight-knit team in the role of Staff Internal Auditor. Denver Water’s Internal Audit team reports directly to the Board of Water Commissioners and conducts operational, financial, and strategic audits – as well as investigations and consulting engagements. You will be exposed to essentially all aspects of Denver Water’s mission-driven business.
Denver Water’s Internal Audit team is an active member of the IIA, and follows Red Book standards. You will get exposure to profession-leading work – built around in-depth critical thinking, providing value-added insights, and conducting complex analysis. You will work with leaders and staff from the bottom to the top of the organization, and gain valuable experience across multiple disciplines.
We are looking for a self-driven, accomplished candidate, who is comfortable skillfully and professionally challenging the thinking of the group and the status quo. Strong analysis and strong written and verbal communication skills are crucial.
And, we are entirely redeveloping our operational campus just west of downtown – moving into our new offices sometime in late 2019. Be a part of our new start.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in the development of audit programs, interview management and staff, perform complex analysis and testing, and evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of processes and controls.
Operate in accordance with the International Professional Practice Framework of the IIA (IPPF - Red Book).
Establish and maintain a high level of credibility with audit clients and senior management.
Communicate observations and recommendations to management. Document work and write audit reports for the Board of Commissioners and Executive Management.
Assist in risk assessment and scoping activities to drive the annual audit plan.
Assist organization in accomplishing objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluating and improving the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.
Work with audit clients to develop risk-appropriate resolutions to audit issues, and follow up on progress of resolution.
Occasionally participate in fraud and ethics investigations, including preparation of documentation for legal action and oral testimony.
Ability to demonstrate insight to audit clients on ways they can improve efficiency, effectiveness, control, and oversight.
Perform related work as required.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or a related field.
Minimum 3 years of related work experience.
Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Licenses, Registration and Certifications:
Candidates either possessing, or working towards, the CIA, CPA, CISA or related certifications preferred.
May require HIPAA Training.
Strong data analysis skills – using industry-standard tools like Excel, Access, ACL, IDEA, Minitab
Strong organization skills and detail orientation
Strong critical thinking.
Conducting interviews and leading groups.
Strong business writing
Experience with LEAN/ Six Sigma and/or other continuous improvement methodologies a plus
This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities over other employees.
Travel – less than 10%
