The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota seeks to fill a full time appointment to teach Hmong starting fall semester 2017. The position will be full-time for fall semester 2017 (08/28/17 - 01/10/18) and spring semester 2018 (01/11/18 - 05/27/18). There is an option for teaching summer courses. The position is for day, evening, or a combination of day/evening courses, taught on a semester basis. The full-time appointment is eligible for benefits. Salary range is competitive based upon qualifications. The position may be annually renewable depending on departmental need, funding and performance.
Duties and responsibilities: Teach assigned language classes/sections; keep office hours; prepare course materials; engage in curriculum development; prepare and grade exams; and participate in program governance as appropriate.
Bachelors degree or foreign equivalent. Native or near-native fluency in Hmong. Strong English language communication skills, and university-level teaching experience in Hmong language. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Masters or Ph.D., or foreign equivalent. Some experience teaching Hmong language or culture courses. Demonstrated effective leadership experience through teaching, program coordination, group facilitation or community outreach. Experience with innovative approaches to teaching and mentoring students and/or staff. Evidence of successfully motivating students. Candidates with a Bachelors or Masters degree will be appointed as Teaching Specialist; candidates with a Ph.D. will be appointed as Lecturer.
