Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Financial Aid Officer to provide support to The Office Of Financial Aid. Reporting to the Assistant Manager of Financial Aid, this position will be responsible for accurate and timely processing of applications for financial assistance in accordance with all federal, state, and institutional regulations and policies. The Senior Financial Aid Officer provides individual counseling to students and families on all aspects of the financial aid process including proper completion of application and other forms, loan options, budget planning, debt management and the overall awarding process. The key duties of this position are the following:
Assists support staff in answering students' questions and disseminating accurate information via one-on-one sessions, telephone and written communications.
Serves as a representative of the university at various outreach activities such as high school nights, university open house, orientation, and financial aid workshops.
Reads and reviews applications for financial aid using verification procedures and constructs financial aid packages for applicants using the university's packaging policy relevant for the student in question..
Identifies discrepancies and follows up with student and/or parent to ensure that the financial aid information upon which an award package is based is accurate and auditable.
Gathers, reads, and analyzes supporting documentation necessary to disburse aid according to either university policy, or according to strict federal verification regiment.
Addresses edit reports and discrepancy lists coming from the data processing system and from the comparison of our information with that held by the state and/or federal governments or other university departments.
Maintains university data processing systems, specifically the Financial Aid Management System (FAMS) and Image Now including knowledge of often sophisticated data processing concepts as well as familiarization with database values, which frequently differ across systems.
Provides input to the Assistant Manager and management team on the flow of information processing.
Identifies and suggests resolutions for any backlogs or bottlenecks or for procedures that seem to inhibit efficiency.
Performs various other tasks and duties as assigned to support The Office of Financial Aid.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience plus a minimum of two years' experience in student financial aid that demonstrates knowledge of administering federal financial assistance programs and program counseling and outreach.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires the ability to understand complex information; provide clear and concise instructions to a diverse clientele through a variety of media
Requires high volume, detailed work under time constraints and ability to collaborate to resolve difficult situations.
Requires coordination, organization, facilitation, research, mathematical, statistical, and program report analysis skills.
Good communication, presentation and editing skills required.
Effective counseling skills and computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite required.
Experience with network mainframe and PC systems required.
Experience working with the Financial Aid Management System (FAMS); and knowledge of state aid preferred.
Two or more years of professional experience in financial aid.
Computers using latest online technology.
Financial Aid Management System (FAMS) and Microsoft Suite.
