Our Executive Director is responsible for creating strategies; developing, managing and implementing comprehensive EH&S programs for UC Berkeley; and ensuring a safe workplace for all. The EH&S programs include but are not limited to biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety, hazardous materials and environmental management, industrial hygiene, fire safety, and shop safety. Our Executive Director leads and has responsibility for the overall operations of UC Berkeley?s EH&S programs, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations in furtherance of protecting people and the environment. The successful candidate will create, develop and implement strategies and programs to meet changing regulatory demands, and ensure protection and consideration of the public interest. The Executive Director provides broad technical management expertise to balance regulatory requirements with Berkeley?s research and educational needs, financial considerations, and strong institutional values. ?Advise and build strong relationships with UC Berkeley senior leaders to ensure EH&S functions are considered in all aspects of research and operations. ?Provide leadership and direction to EH&S Program Managers. ?Develop, prioritize, and implement the budget portfolio for EH&S functions. ?Provide EH&S management team with vision for effective design and administration of training and policies. ?Guide EH&S managers to effectively liaise with government regulators, campus researchers, and university leadership in addressing compliance issues. ?Promote continuous improvement in EH&S operations through training, program enhancements based on data-driven approaches, and risk prioritization. Integrate these EH&S performance-based objectives into standard business processes that are aligned with UC Berkeley core missions of advancing research, education, and sharing of knowledge worldwide. Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research, the EH&S Executive Director is responsible for leading a diverse organization of over sixty-eight staff members through six managerial direct reports, facilities that include the operation of a 20,000 square foot Hazardous Materials Facility building and vehicle fleet, and an annual budget of nearly $10M from multiple sources. The position promotes EH&S collaboration with over 220 Department Safety Coordinators in units throughout the campus.?At least fifteen years of experience in EH&S roles, including at least six years senior leadership/management experience to coach, motivate, lead and direct subordinate managers and staff. ?Strong working knowledge of the relevant technical requirements, logistics, materials, operations, policies, rules, and regulations in workplace health and safety, environmental protection, and environmental health disciplines. ?Experience in risk communication and risk management for various target populations. ?Advanced written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills to effectively address complex and potentially sensitive subject matter, including expertise and skill to interact successfully with a diverse array of academic, technical, scientific, legal, political, and public entities. Includes ability to communicate effectively in a full range of forums with a stakeholder-focused approach. Like many public universities, Berkeley is going through a challenging period. The university faces significant operational challenges in several areas, including: strengthening shared services and common goods, stabilizing enterprise technology systems, attending to backlogged deferred maintenance, and managing campus operations and maintaining service levels in light of significant budget reductions. The safety culture at the campus is strong, and the university is seeking to strengthen its senior leadership team with an EH&S Executive Director who can continue to improve safety culture and processes in the context of other operational and budgetary challenges. A sense of optimism, urgency, transparency, sensitivity, and purpose will be key.
