This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position as an AmeriCorps member of WAUKEGAN TO COLLEGE. The Program Associate position is responsible for helping guide first-generation, low-income youth as young as 5th grade prepare, enroll, and matriculate to a four-year college or university. The AmeriCorps member will provide support, guidance, and encouragement in the development of the youth’s academic success, personal growth and development, leadership, and service to their community. In addition, the AmeriCorps member will also help parents learn how they can help their child succeed, understand the school system, and gain more knowledge in college readiness.
Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize, and attention to detail.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive documents and spreadsheets, and data entry.
Aptitude and appreciation for working with a diverse group of people, passion for work in education, and committed to making a difference in the community.
Skilled at taking initiative, creative thinking and problem solving skills, and working independently.
Strong verbal skills to communicate with staff, students and families, volunteers, and community groups.
Skilled at written communication and research to help develop program materials and reports, and help review student’s essays or other required college or scholarship documents.
Skilled at building interpersonal relationships and to work/serve effectively as part of a team.
Willingness to communicate with students and parents during off hours if necessary.
Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Able to react to change positively and productively, and to handle other tasks as assigned.
Must have a valid driver’s license or government issued I.D., and reliable transportation.
Must be willing to complete a background check, and complete a Child Protection Workshop.
Additional Salary Information: Program Associate will have health care benefits and can earn a $5,815 education award to be applied to students loans or future education costs.

We are creating a college-going culture within an at-risk population with high poverty, low literacy, and low college attainment. With the help of volunteers, staff and the community, W2C i...s putting families on a path to higher education and out of poverty. These families are not familiar with the college-going process but dream of sending their children to college. W2C works intensively with parents and students through monthly advising and workshops. Students, starting as young as fifth grade, receive one-on-one academic assistance through weekly tutoring, reading coaching, and math enrichment sessions. Founded in 2009, W2C has helped 27 first-generation students earn college degrees.
