Soka University of America is seeking a Financial Aid Counselor to support the university’s enrollment service goals and initiatives. Under the direction of the Associate Director of Financial Aid, this position is responsible for advising and awarding Federal, State, and Institutional aid accurately through careful analysis of financial aid data and documentation. This individual is also responsible for ensuring that the university is in compliance with complex government and institutional regulations.
The Financial Aid Counselor will advise both new and returning students and their parents on all aspects of financial aid, deliver financial aid presentations for informational meetings, orientations, open houses and training sessions on and off campus as required.
Necessary duties include but are not limited to:
Awarding various types of aid such as Pell Grant, FSEOG, Federal Work Study, Cal Grant, Federal/Institutional Loans, Institutional Aid, Scholarships, Veterans Benefits, and other outside aid with accuracy.
Managing entrance/exit counseling, performing needs analysis, reviewing various reports and verification documents to determine eligibility, evaluate student’s satisfactory academic progress and assist the Associate Director of Financial Aid in creating and updating policy, procedures, forms, website, and other communication tools.
Serve as the main point of contact for walk-in, phone and email correspondence with students, parents, and the general public.
The Financial Aid Counselor is also responsible for keeping current with federal regulation and addresses frequent changes in financial aid matters by attending regular trainings, conferences, and accessing various financial aid resources.

A Bachelor’s degree
Preference for a minimum of 1-3 years of Financial Aid/ higher education administration experience
Strong working knowledge of federal financial aid regulations
Knowledge of financial aid needs analysis and verification procedures
Knowledge of federal, state and institutional financial aid programs
Excellent interpersonal communication skills in person, written, and by phone
Capacity for developing and sustaining effective relationships with administrators, faculty, staff and students
Ability to interact with a diverse student and staff population
High proficiency in personal computer systems utilizing databases, word processing, graphics, spreadsheets, to include PeopleSoft, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and other software applications
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
High ethical and professional standards
