The Society of Chemical Manufacturers & Affiliates (SOCMA), a trade association representing a diverse membership of small, medium, and large chemical companies located around the world, is seeking an individual to serve as the Manager, Legislative Affairs in its Government Relations department.
The Manager, Legislative Affairs is responsible for the management of issues related to environment, health & safety, security, labor, trade and other policy matters impacting the specialty chemical industry. He/she will provide representation and advocacy before Federal agencies as well as state legislatures. Responsibilities include managing committees and task forces which relate to the policy issues of the organization. Providing significant contribution to government relations related communications efforts, and supporting the Managing Director, Government Relations in long-term strategy planning and implementation.
Develop and execute advocacy strategies; analyze and evaluate existing and proposed legislation and policy developments.
Actively engage legislators on development of legislation. Meet with legislative policymakers and staff to promote SOCMA positions.
Serve as staff liaison to committees and related Task Forces. Provide committee/task force management, planning and administrative oversight. Responsible for committee/task force work products and managing related staff initiatives.
Monitor, analyze and interpret legislation on behalf of the specialty chemicals industry. Track and search for new legislation on the federal and state level.
Draft testimony, one pagers, and educational materials.
Assist in the planning and execution of SOCMA’s annual Washington, DC Fly-in event. Develop and implement grass roots initiatives.
Create and implement communication strategies and outreach initiatives; develop key messages and supporting arguments to include speeches, brochures, presentations, reports, articles, press releases, blog posts and white papers as needed.
Develop and manage website content.
Develop and maintain a network of key decision makers and officials from congressional staff, related industry trade groups, coalitions, and the media.
Develop programs, products and services, including webinars and educational opportunities.
Assist Managing Director, Government Relations by providing support in accomplishing established GR team strategic initiatives.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills including public speaking. communication skills with success in public and media relations environments.
Knowledge of the chemical industry and related trade associations, preferably in Environment, Trade, Labor, and Safety.
Effective and productive relationship management and customer/stakeholder service skills. Ability to consistently respond in a professional and timely manner to member inquiries. Ability to handle concurrent projects.
Proven leadership, organizational, problem-solving and business development skills, including strategy development and implementation.
