The Law School is one of 18 schools and colleges that make up the University of Washington's Seattle campus. The School of Law is nationally ranked and internationally recognized for its outstanding faculty scholarship, excellent student body drawn from a national pool, highly favorable student/faculty ratio, and a commitment to public service. Located in the vibrant and innovative city of Seattle, the UW School of Law offers a broad-based curriculum in national and international law to more than 700 students enrolled in the JD, LLM, MJ, and PhD degree programs. It has innovative programs and areas of excellence, and the 57 full-time faculty, along with a strong cohort of adjunct and part-time faculty, teach and conduct scholarship across a wide array of legal specializations. The School enjoys a dedicated staff and strong support from the community. The Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library is one of the nation's outstanding law libraries; it houses one of the largest university law collections on the West Coast, including the renowned Asian law collection.
The School enjoys tremendous support from the local business and legal community and has a large endowment with numerous endowed professorships and scholarship opportunities. Among these resources are the endowed William H. Gates Public Service Law Fellowship Program awarding full scholarships to students pursuing public interest law, the Gregoire Fellowship Program that supports students from diverse backgrounds pursuing their JD degrees, and the Barer Fellowship that supports graduate students from developing economies.
The successful candidate will be a proven leader with the ability to develop and implement, within an institutional context of shared governance, a vision for the future that mobilizes the significant strengths of the School's faculty, student body, and staff. This will require outstanding communication skills, the ability to inspire and collaborate with numerous and diverse stakeholders, experience in academic and fiscal management, and a genuine commitment to advancement and fundraising. The successful candidate will have a distinguished record as a scholar, and the academic achievements of this individual should be appropriate for an appointment at the rank of Professor of Law at the University of Washington. Moreover, the Dean will be expected to demonstrate commitment to advancing the university's research, teaching, and service missions, as well as promoting ideals of diversity. Finally, the Dean must be an effective advocate who can represent the School of Law among the numerous schools, colleges, and programs across the university as well as among the wide variety of important national and international constituencies. In short, the new Dean will show potential for continuing the UW School of Law on its current trajectory of excellence.
