California State University, Chico invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA). The Vice President is the executive officer for the Division of Student Affairs.
The Vice President is a member of the President's Cabinet and reports directly to the President, serving as a leader and collaborator in the University's strategic planning and decision-making activities. The VPSA is responsible for fostering the University's commitment to student success by actively developing, implementing, and maintaining undergraduate and graduate programs that enrich student learning, build and maintain a strong sense of community, and promote growth through engagement in the life of the University. Working with faculty and staff, the VPSA serves as an advocate for student learning in all dimensions of student life and has a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
The Division of Student Affairs encompasses programs that support more than 17,000 students in a residential campus environment. The VPSA is responsible for creating an environment of collegiality and inclusiveness for the University's diverse student body and providing executive-level leadership and direction in the administration of a comprehensive range of services, policies and procedures.
Areas reporting to the VPSA are: Accessibility Resource Center, Career Center, Counseling and Wellness, Diversity, Early Outreach and Support Programs, Enrollment Management Services, Intercollegiate Athletics, Student Life and Leadership, Student Health Services, Student Judicial Affairs, University Housing, Associated Students, and Off-Campus Student Services.
Responsibilities: As chief student affairs officer, the Vice President is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and strategic direction to the division of Student Affairs. The Vice President is charged with the overall management planning, administration, and evaluation of the division's programs, services, personnel, policies, procedures development, facilities and budget. The Vice President plays a principal role in setting and enacting University priorities and keeping the University engaged in national conversations affecting student affairs. The University seeks a student-centered, collaborative and innovative VPSA who can demonstrate or has the following:
An earned doctorate preferred; master's degree required.
Demonstrated effective leadership, a minimum of 5 years, in planning, implementing, evaluating, and advocating for a wide range of programs in student affairs.
Demonstrated experience with budget management, supervision of a large staff and staff development and empowerment.
Preferred critical attributes:
Demonstrated sophisticated understanding of college student development.
Demonstrated experience working with a diverse campus community and a commitment to equity and inclusiveness in a multicultural and multinational environment.
Experience and commitment to enhancing an active and collaborative relationship between Student Affairs and other divisions (Academic Affairs, Business and Finance, and Advancement).
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with internal and external constituencies, including the City of Chico and northern California service area.
Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of student affairs practices and principles.
Ability to promote student recruitment and retention, but especially of first-generation, low-income students from diverse backgrounds.
Evidence of collaborative and innovative practices.
Ability to communicate a vision for the future of Student Affairs.
Demonstrated competence/knowledge in a collective bargaining environment.
Demonstrated commitment to the principles of shared governance and transparency.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective teams.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively listen to all points of view, build consensus, and inform others of policies and plans.
Demonstrated knowledge of campus requirements associated with Title IX and the Clery Act and demonstrated ability to work with University and city law enforcement.
