The Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (DGHSM) at Harvard Medical School applies social science and humanities research to constantly improve the practice of medicine, the delivery of treatment, and the development of health care policies locally and worldwide. The DGHSM is at the forefront of global health. To maintain our leadership of the field, the Department must: underline our commitment to teaching and research in global health equity; maintain and enhance support for "effector arms," with a focus on implementation and delivery; strengthen models of graduate and post-graduate training, including through global health and social medicine advanced degree programs, residencies, and fellowships; and coordinate efforts throughout Harvard to build a common agenda around global health equity.
The Program in Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC), based in the DGHSM, aims to strengthen surgical systems through implementation science, research, advocacy, and training leaders in academic global surgery. The PGSSC works in the areas of research, advocacy, and international health policy to improve surgical care delivery in low-resource settings around the world.
The DGHSM is seeking a strong applicant for the position of Senior Researcher for the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change. The Senior Researcher reports to the PGSSC Director of Research and is a member of the PGSSC team. The Senior Researcher will work closely with the Safe Surgery 2020 (SS2020) team within the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC), including the Research Assistants, Research Coordinator, Research Fellows and Faculty, as well as the SS2020 collaborating partners and the governments of Tanzania, Ethiopia and other countries to be determined. This person will work closely with other individuals within the Program as well as with global surgery colleagues at the GE Foundation in the establishment, monitoring, and evaluation of their Safe Surgery 2020 initiative (http://safesurgery2020.org/). (S)he will perform and coordinate a wide range of tasks, including interaction with the Ministries of Health and collaboration on a variety of high-level policy making tasks, such as the creation of National Surgical Planning Proposals, assisting in writing policy briefs, etc. The Senior Researcher will also take a lead on the data analysis work and together with PGSSC faculty, Research Fellows and staff coordinate the creation of all relevant content, including academic articles, Op-Ed pieces, programmatic reports, policy briefs on health policy and global health, and presentations. The Senior Researcher will mentor PGSSC Fellows and provide research and academic guidance.
Extended periods of travel ranging between 8-12 weeks in low- and middle-income countries are expected.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Developing plans and strategies for the project based on the proposal and establishing the execution of the research agenda together with the the project Co-PIs, Research Fellows and Project Coordinator.
Developing subject matter expertise in the issues surrounding health policy and global health relevant to SS2020 project.
Responsibility for complex database maintenance and data records, software needs assessment, or other technological resource management and oversight, ability to use statistical software to work with data sets and oversee the work of colleagues.
Producing research reports and other materials analyzing the data collected by PGSSC and SS2020 partners for use by policymakers and academics.
Acting as a spokesperson in numerous settings, including conferences and meetings with the SS2020 partners and governments of countries SS2020 works with.
Collaborating with, and mentoring PGSSC fellows and students contributing to the numerous research projects they are working on.
Participating in calls, meetings, conferences, and seminars.
This is a term appointment through December 31, 2018.

Master's degree in Public Health, Global Health, Health Policy or Health Administration required. Three years of related research experience required. Experience with program evaluation and research methods expected. Experience and track record of academic publications.
PhD preferred. Strong critical thinking, analytical and writing skills. Ability and competence to manage data collection process and data file management. May lead and direct the work of colleagues. Ability, willingness and flexibility to travel for extended periods of time in low-income countries with relatively short notice.
