Montclair State was founded in 1908 as the New Jersey State Normal School in Montclair and conferred degrees to its first class of 45 graduates in 1910. Today, it is the second largest University in New Jersey and a leading institution of higher education ranked among the top 200 national universities in the country by U.S. News & World Report.
Designated a Research Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, the University’s ten colleges and schools offer more than 300 majors, minors, concentrations and certificate programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels to a total of 21,000 students, divided into approximately 17,000 undergraduates and 4,000 graduate students.
The Vice Provost for Research and Dean of The Graduate School reports to the Provost and is a member of the Deans’ Council. Benefiting from a distinguished and growing faculty of scholars and scientists, Montclair State is poised to elevate its rapidly expanding graduate and research agendas. Together, the University’s ten colleges and schools include: the College of the Arts; the College of Education and Human Services; the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; the College of Science and Mathematics; the Feliciano School of Business; the School of Communication and Media; the John J. Cali School of Music; the School of Nursing; The Graduate School; and The School of Conservation.
Currently, The Graduate School enrolls some 4,000 graduate students in 8 doctoral programs and 37 masters programs. The University awards the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.—7 programs), Doctor of Audiology, (Au.D.), Master of Arts (MA); Master of Business Administration (MBA); Master of Education (MEd); Master of Fine Arts (MFA); Master of Music (MMus); Master of Public Health (MPH); Master of Science (MS); and Master of Arts Teaching (MAT). The Vice Provost for Research/Dean supervises a fully trained and talented staff of 14 in the Graduate School. Duties and Responsibilities
The Vice Provost for Research and Dean of The Graduate School exercises primary responsibility for the successful continued growth, strategic development, and administration of the University’s externally funded research initiatives, and is the chief administrative and academic officer of The Graduate School. The successful candidate will be expected to work effectively with faculty, deans, other administrators and the Graduate Council within the University and will be responsible to support the building of alliances with off-campus constituencies, businesses, partner institutions and government that will lead to increased resources for the University and employment opportunities for graduates. The Vice Provost/Dean will be the University’s chief advocate for research, overseeing the University’s strategic research agenda and providing intellectual leadership for the shaping of that agenda across the disciplines and promoting its application in support of the instructional mission. Primary responsibilities for the Vice Provost and Dean will include: working with Deans to define growth areas in graduate education and increasing graduate enrollments in both size and diversity; implementing effective policies to support the recruitment and academic achievement of graduate students; sharpening the academic quality, focus and competitiveness of the University’s graduate programs; facilitating activities that enhance the research infrastructure of the institution, including the development of technology transfer capabilities; increasing the current level of external funding and strategically managing sources of internal funding.
A candidate should possess an earned doctorate and a record of distinguished academic achievement appropriate for the rank of full professor in a department of the University. In addition, the following characteristics will be important considerations in the evaluation of candidates:
•Demonstrated commitment to, and success in, supporting the scholarly and research initiatives of faculty; •A personal record of research achievement; •Broad knowledge of funding sources and the ability to enhance and increase faculty participation in research opportunities; •Knowledge of matters related to research compliance such as human subjects, conflict of interest and other research-related issues; •A strong record in graduate education and experience with national issues in graduate education; •Demonstrated experience as a program builder; •Skill in working with an array of graduate programs, and knowledge of curricular and programmatic trends in graduate education; •Successful experience in developing strategies for enrollment management; •Demonstrated commitment to, and success in, supporting the academic achievement of graduate students. •Excellent communication and consensus-building skills in the academic setting.
