Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) is a $17 million research organization at Iowa State University that includes seven centers and seven programs. InTrans conducts transportation-related research and outreach, and addresses the education and workforce development needs of future transportation professionals. InTrans' mission is to develop and implement innovative methods, materials, and technologies for improving transportation system efficiency, safety, reliability, and sustainability while improving the learning environment of students, faculty, and staff in transportation-related fields.
The REealtime AnalytiCs of TranspORtation Data (REACTOR) Lab is organized within the Center for Transportation Research and Education (CTRE) group at InTrans. This lab has become an industry leading high-performance computing facility for transportation data analytics, operational decision-making, performance monitoring, and data fusion including weather, safety, and the roadway environment. Having established relationships with industry, government, and academia, the lab supports a wide variety of research from operations and maintenance decision support to predictive analytics and connected and autonomous vehicle related efforts.
The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) seeks applicants for an Assistant Scientist. This position will be filled at the Assistant Scientist II or III level. This position will include working with large amounts of transportation-related data from a variety of sources and in different formats and feeds. The work will include monitoring data completeness and quality as well as reporting current status using facts, figures, and number crunching. This position will be working in a team where good communications skills are required along with the ability to write and speak clearly, and easily communicate complex ideas both within a work group and externally with sponsors. This position will support a team effort in looking at numbers, trends, and data when considering alternative conclusions to specific findings. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented and quick to take action when necessary. In addition to the above, the Assistant Scientist III level will be expected to lead review on accuracy of data analysis calculations, lead development of tools to explore or report findings, calculate transportation performance metrics and will lead the development of technical reports analyzing research project status.
The successful candidate will have exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate and work with a wide range of people from faculty and staff to undergraduates. They must have ability to work with basic computer applications and the ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with people will also be important for success in this position. They will also have ability to work independently as well as part of a team with a diverse group of people in the university community.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience in Transportation Engineering. Experience in basic highway operations and safety engineering. Experience in data visualization (Tableau, Power BI, etc). Experience in coding such as Python, C++, or Java. Experience in data visualization (Tableau, Power BI, etc).
