UW Medicine Patient Financial Services is a shared services department, located in the UW Tower building. As part of the University of Washington, UW Medicine includes UW Medical Center (UWMC) and Harborview Medical Center (HMC). Patient Financial Services is responsible for the patient accounting functions for UWMC and HMC, including billing for inpatient and outpatient medicine services provided at the Medical Centers.
Our Patient Financial Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time PATIENT FINANCIAL SERVICES SPECIALIST 2. This individual will prepare UB, HCFA, ADA and other utilized billing forms via paper or electronic means; prepare Accounts Receivable (A/R) transactions; access computer databases to obtain eligibility information; update patient demographic and financial information; communicate with Medical Centers' staff, patients and/or third party payors as required to obtain or verify billing information or payment, and answer questions/ resolve concerns; document specific actions taken on individual accounts in the EPIC HB system.
RESPONSIBILITIES Handle a very high volume of calls in a highly structured environment Provide excellent customer service to patients, families and third parties with the goal of putting Patients First. Handle specific requests and work the patient's entire account during a single call. Resolve patient requests in one call or successfully manages prolonged or complex issues toward resolution. Provide thorough and concise documentation on each call to ensure timely, appropriate transfer of information as a reference to other staff and other departments. Work with patients on behalf of Financial Counselors to ensure applications for assistance are complete and thorough prior to first review. Act as a liaison between patients and billing department to resolve complicated billing issues resulting in a clear understanding of outcome. Access insurance portals for verification of insurance coverage information to assure accuracy in billing and make updates accordingly. Coordinate with Interpreter Services as indicated. Perform billing adjustments, initiate rebilling, stop bills and makes payment transfers within set guidelines. Recognize when patients are frustrated or may require education or instruction beyond the issue at hand. Defuse conflicting or hostile situations with minimal supervisory assistance. Manage calls and responsibilities in accordance with the PFS Quality Audit Policy and Procedure. Perform research and resolution to all other patient billing inquiries as required.

REQUIREMENTS: High School graduation or equivalent AND two years of experience in an appropriately related patient accounting function. OR Equivalent education/experience.
DESIRED: 1-2 years in a customer service and problem resolution preferably in a medical environment.
