Position Summary: The University of California's Office of the General Counsel provides legal services advise to the Office of the President and other senior University of California administrators over a broad range of legal matters affecting the University's real property interests throughout the University's ten campuses, five medical centers, and additional University owned or managed properties. The incumbent uses their substantial real estate, housing, and development experience, including drafting and negotiating complex leases, purchase and sales agreements, and development agreements, and has experience with public private partnerships as real estate delivery methods.
The incumbent has sufficient understanding of the laws, including tax laws, that govern transactions for major commercial, mixed-use and residential projects, acquisitions, sales, leases, licenses, and financing, as well as significant experience in drafting and negotiating related real estate documents. A working knowledge of municipal finance transactions, particularly with respect to higher education municipal bond financing, as well as some experience with other forms of debt and hedging instruments is desirable.
Experience with student housing, incubator or other research related projects, and campus infrastructure projects is highly preferred as well as experience with condominiums and vertical subdivisions, the Stull Act, property tax issues, anti-kickback and Stark compliance in medical leasing, investment property management, lease-leaseback developments, donor developments, financing trust structures and ground leases is also highly preferred.
