The Drinkwater lab at Cornell University seeks an energetic, responsible person for a research technician position. Our research investigates the mechanisms governing plant-microbial interactions and carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling in agroecosystems. We work at scales ranging from the rhizosphere, where plant-microbial interactions dominate, to the field and landscape scale, where human interventions interact with biotic and abiotic factors to strongly influence ecosystem processes. The purpose of this research is to improve the ecological efficiency and sustainability of agricultural systems. Responsibilities include but are not limited to setting up and managing field/greenhouse experiments, collection and preparation of soil and plant samples for elemental and stable isotope analyses; lab analyses of soil properties and microbial processes; operation and maintenance of major lab instruments; and coordination of undergraduate student assistance with these and related tasks.
This is a 1 year terms appointment; extension is contingent upon successful performance & availability of funds.
B.S. /B.A in environmental, soil or agricultural science with 2-4 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Must possess excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, and must be responsible, flexible, personable, proactive, and able to multi-task and work with moderate supervision.
Excellent verbal and written skills are essential. . Must be able to communicate effectively within a research team environment and with practitioners (farmers/extensionists).
Knowledge of laboratory instruments (elemental analysis, pH meter, centrifuge, micro-balance) and willing to learn new laboratory skills.
Able to interpret and comply with safety protocols.
Must have a working knowledge of standard computer spreadsheet and related programs and demonstrate knowledge of basic data management skills.
Must be able to lift 20-30 pounds, and conduct field work under a range of weather conditions.
Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
Demonstrated ability to lead discussions and present material orally.
Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity are required.
Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment to accomplish required tasks to achieve departmental objectives.
Knowledge and experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Must have and maintain a valid NYS driver's license, for travel to local farms.
Knowledge and experience with agroecological research and soil analytical methods commonly used in our laboratory.
Some experience and to be familiar with experiential approach to adult education.
