The University of Michigan Medical School is seeking an experienced financial manager to join the Medical School Finance team. This position will help manage the Medical School’s large and diverse book of business ($1.6B annually), and serve as a leader to business and financial analysts on the broader Medical School Finance team. The primary responsibility will be the development and ongoing management of executive analysis and strategy in support of the Medical School’s and Michigan Medicine’s strategic goals.
Reporting to the Medical School’s Associate Chief Financial Officer (ACFO), candidates for this position are expected to exhibit strong leadership skills and function as a team player. Candidates should also have a strong understanding of financial concepts and a thorough financial acumen. Experience in and understanding of Academic Medical Centers is desired.
As the Senior Financial Manager for Medical School Finance, a typical day will include:
Engaging with members of the team and ensuring tasks are being completed, projects are on pace to meet deadlines, and team member’s needs are being met
Working closely with the ACFO to ensure projects are being completed and that the team’s efforts are in alignment with the goals of the broader team and institution as a whole
Reviewing the financial analysis, modeling, and planning completed by members of the team, and offering feedback on results, modifications, and areas of improvement
Presenting at various meetings and forums across the institution on the financial performance of the Medical School and other finance-related topics as it relates to work being completed on the team
Collaborating with other functional teams across the Medical School, Michigan Medicine, and the University to complete cross-team work products and discover additional opportunities for synergies

This position will entail the following activities and functions, and knowledge and/or interest in these primary areas are desired:
Manage a team of direct reports, which includes responsibility for employee development, mentoring, performance management, and engagement
Cultivate an environment of high performance, integrity, and financial stewardship across the team and address employee relations issues as needed
Departmental support: Serving as a liaison and support figure for academic departments, which include 20 clinical science departments and 10 basic science departments, in all matters regarding finance
Medical School Administration support: Serving as a liaison and support figure for all the departments and functions that comprise the Medical School Administration office, in all matters regarding finance
Center and Institute support: Serving as a liaison and support figure for all of the centers and institutes contained within the Medical School in all matters regarding finance
Financial budgeting: Leading the central finance budget process for all academic departments, centers, institutes, and support functions within the Medical School and ensuring all areas complete a comprehensive and timely budget
Financial reporting: Ensuring that all monthly reports created by the Medical School are completed on time and accurately, and offer guidance to members of the team creating these reports
Provost Office engagement: Working with the University’s Provost Office on budgetary requests and submissions, as well as other data and information requests
Financial business cases: Offering ad-hoc management and guidance on the financial component of business cases created across the Medical School
Executive leadership support: Serving as a trusted business leader and offering support and guidance to executive leadership across Michigan Medicine
Additional Job Functions: This position will entail the following activities and functions, and knowledge and/or interest in these additional areas are desired:
Develop, interpret, and implement highly complex financial and accounting concepts, and advanced techniques for financial planning and control
Act as a consultant between customers (departments, centers, institutes, and support functions), and central finance, and ensure leadership, faculty, and staff within all departments are having their needs met and feel supported by the Medical School Finance team and all of finance
Identify opportunities to educate customers to allow them to make informed choices and decisions on their own financial matters that will set them up for both short-term and long-term success
Partner with other leaders across the Medical School on support of customers and discover ways to work together in better serving customers and improving the overall financial acumen and financial health across the Medical School
Provide additional support and assistance to smaller departments, centers, and institutes that have few or no finance staff, in order to ensure financials are being managed properly and that these customers are successful in creating and fostering financial health
Engage with other departments on budget items, such as the Controller’s Office, in order to ensure budget efforts are co-aligned and that budget information is being submitted accurately and timely
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, or similar
Proven ability to manage a diverse team and maximize team performance to meet operational deadlines
Demonstrated experience assessing competing priorities and managing workflow to achieve successful outcomes
Experience communicating financial results, analysis, and recommendations to clients and leadership, both in writing and in person
Financial Senior Manager required qualifications:
Five or more years of experience directly managing a team of three or more employees
Five or more years of experience managing financial and budgetary operations
Three to five years of experience directly managing a team of three or more employees
Three to five years of experience managing financial and budgetary operations
Master’s degree in Finance, Business, or similar
Experience managing financial operations in government and/or healthcare settings
Experience in Business Objects, PeopleSoft, Oracle, and/or Hyperion
