Purpose of Position:
Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal: Provide guidance to undergraduate students on academic programs and university procedures and documents related to completing their undergraduate education; Work with undergraduate students and faculty from admission through graduation to ensure academic success. Work with various university academic unites to provide support to and recruit undergraduate students. Activities will include being accountable for tracking undergraduate student files; monitoring student progress throughout their undergraduate studies; ensuring that students are certified for graduation in a timely manner. Develop, interpret , document , implement , assess, and apply University, State, Federal, and School policies and procedures in order to ensure the most efficient , timely , and cost effective delivery of undergraduate student support service; Assist faculty, staff, and students by utilizing Ellucian and our own electronic databases, to research student records and to initiate and carry out student actions; Perform academic course corrections/changes and certain student actions without supervision based on preset standards; Work with student s to ensure that they are registered for the appropriate courses and credits. Perform an audit of all student records in Banner and DegreeWorks each semester to ensure that they are registered for the appropriate courses and credits. Manage and maintain all student records, insuring they are accurate and up-to-date, and available for faculty to use in advisement and for student actions;
The core responsibilities for the academic advisor include:
1.Provide academic advising services to assigned students:
Advise students regarding: departmental, collegiate, and University policies and procedures; programs of study; and the development of appropriate academic plans.
Write letters of recommendation and letters of support for student appeals.
Assist students in identifying their interests, abilities, and academic goals and in making decisions regarding their academic career.
Introduce students to opportunities that will enrich their academic experience, facilitate their academic and personal development, and support their educational success.
Teach students how to manage the college experience, navigate the University, make informed decisions, and assume responsibility for their academic success.
Identify and assist struggling or at-risk students.
Make appropriate referrals to other university resources.
Assist students in completing graduation applications.
Participate in and provide feedback on training and professional development activities.
2.Collaborate with university partners on matters that impact student recruitment, success, and retention:
Participate in recruitment activities, programs, and initiatives.
Provide advising information to prospective students and/or parents.
Provide advising services to students during New Student Orientation.
Support departmental and University retention initiatives.
Contact continuing students who do not register for classes.
3.Maintain accurate and confidential records of student information, including advising interactions:
Document all advising interactions with students.
Maintain accurate and confidential records on students.
Master's degree in one of the discipline in the School of Government & Public Affairs, student personnel, college counseling or a related field.
Demonstrated experience providing academic advising in a college or university setting.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment
One year of experience processing graduation applications.
Demonstrated experience using Banner, SSC Campus (or Foundation) and Degree Works.
Demonstrated experience working with students on student appeals and petitions.
Demonstrated ability to manage academic processes within and across academic units.
Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills as well as customer service.
