The Assistant Dean of Distance Learning manages the creation of online course content for a wide range of Northwestern University School of Professional Studies (SPS) master’s, bachelors, and certificate programs. The assistant dean leads an experienced team of instructional designers and multimedia specialists in an innovative and fast-paced environment, collaborating with faculty to ensure that SPS delivers engaging, comprehensive, and cutting-edge online programs to students from all 50 U.S. states and 34 countries worldwide. The Assistant Dean provides strategic leadership, leveraging significant expertise in educational technology, online pedagogy, and operational implementation of academic programs. She/he will have a lead role in the evolution of SPS’s online learning strategy and will drive SPS online initiatives within SPS, the University, and with external partners.

Define SPS’ distance education strategy and vision, in conjunction with senior academic team.
Lead exploration and adoption of innovative instruction and instructional technologies.
Seek out best practices from industry and other institutions for implementation at SPS.
Implement distance education programs, in conjunction with assistant deans and directors of academic units, using internal and vendor resources.
Oversee distance education curriculum development and instructional design.
Regularly assess the quality of distance education programs and implement strategies for improvement.
Oversee the creation of and adherence to distance education program budgets.
Oversee quality of services provided to students and instructors in distance education programs.
Create and enforce distance education faculty policies.
Oversee the design and implementation of a distance education faculty development/training program.
Communicate SPS’ model of distance education to faculty, other SPS and NU stakeholders, and external audiences, as appropriate.
Represent SPS and articulate its Distance Learning vision and strategy in University committees, in discussions of potential partnerships within NU and the community at-large
Assist Dean with presentations regarding distance education.
Conduct original research on the effectiveness of online learning and how it can best be implemented within an elite university context.
Publish and present research findings in peer-reviewed professional journals and leading conferences.

Management role within distance learning department
Strong analytical and technical problem solving skills.
Strong grasp of educational technology and the challenges of their implementation
Familiarity with higher education organization, and academic policies.
Ability to deal effectively with students, faculty, staff, senior administrators, government agencies and other outside organizations.
Five years of experience in higher education
Budget management experience
Very strong written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of a wide range of educational technologies, adult learning pedagogies, and trends in online and adult education.
Experience supporting faculty in delivery of online courses.
Experience teaching in a higher education context.
Experience working collaboratively in a large, complex organization.
