St. George’s University was founded as an independent School of Medicine in 1976. It is a leading center of international education, dedicated to developing outstanding physicians and improving health standards throughout the world. Its professors, students, and graduates include individuals from 140 countries and there are currently more than 17,000 SGU alumni practicing medicine, veterinary medicine, business and other professions across the globe. Students of St. George’s School of Medicine typically complete five, four, three, or two years of academic studies at the university’s primary campus in Grenada, West Indies, (depending upon their entry qualifications) followed by two years of clinical studies in the United States, Canada or United Kingdom.
In addition to medical degrees, the University also offers veterinary degrees through the School of Veterinary Medicine as well as independent and dual graduate degrees in the sciences, public health, and business. Undergraduate degrees, including pre-med and pre-vet, are also available through St. George’s School of Arts and Sciences. At present, more than 7,000 students are enrolled across 52-degree programs. The University’s programs are accredited and approved by many governing authorities and repeatedly recognized as the best in the region. St. George’s is affiliated with educational institutions worldwide, including the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia and Ireland.
St. George’s University is seeking an accomplished business-oriented executive to assume the newly created position of Senior Vice President, Business Development for SGU. The ideal candidate would have been responsible for business development in a healthcare delivery or academic environment at some point in her/his career.
SGU has entered an exciting period of growth and transformation as it evolves its highly successful model of providing health services professional education as an independent university. The changing landscape of medical and healthcare services delivery and financing in the U.S., and internationally, calls for repositioning medical education with an emphasis on further integration of the pre-clinical and clinical experiences across the spectrum from undergraduate education through continuing professional education. SGU’s School of Medicine has been a pioneer in leveraging its strong institutional partnerships with teaching hospitals and other clinical provider organizations to advance the goals of providing excellent medical education. In addition, SGU has worked closely with new affiliates to support their development of graduate medical education programs. These new programs can be designed to enhance the medical care at these institutions and the clinical education available to third and fourth year medical students.
A significant focus of the SVP’s initial efforts will be identifying, developing, nurturing, and establishing affiliations with hospitals, health systems and other healthcare delivery organizations consistent with enhancement and expansion of clinical education capacity for SGU’s School of Medicine students. This will require travel within the U.S., particularly to California, Florida, Georgia and Illinois which are viewed as attractive states for new partnerships.
The SVP will also be responsible for identifying new domestic sources of revenue for the University through program development, new relationships, joint ventures, and potential mergers and acquisitions within the health care and/or educational industries. It is expected that the SVP will have a strong record of accomplishment in business development within a growth industry related to healthcare services and experience within a medical setting. Candidates with deep knowledge of the design, requirements and financing of hospital-sponsored medical student training programs and graduate medical education will be important experiences.
