Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Development Director serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School (BCBOBS). In partnership with the ED, this position is responsible for the execution of fundraising activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build BCBOBS’ visibility, impact, and financial resources.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in setting and executing against an annual development plan, comfort making “the ask”, the executive presence to work closely with the board, leadership skills to manage a single direct report and a passion for adventure. S/he will expand and diversify BCBOBS’s client and donor base/pipeline and work closely with the Development team member to secure funding for new initiatives.
The Director will have primary responsibility for developing a fundraising team capable of meeting a $2M goal. It is expected that the amount raised by BCBOBS will increase in future years as the Development Director systematically and effectively strengthens the organization's overall fundraising capacity.
Develop and execute annual fundraising plan.
Collaborate with the ED to develop and implement BCBOBS’s financial and strategic plans.
Oversee the daily operations of the Development departmentto assure that the department performs optimally in support of BCBOBS; and, actively work with the Leadership Team to develop and implement a comprehensive, integrated revenue development strategy to include individuals, corporations, foundations, government grants, etc.
Develop and implement development program that identifies prospects for annual and major gifts, and cultivating meaningful relationships and deeper ties with donors in order to secure significant contributions.
Have primary responsibility for development and execution of all proposals; work with grant writer to write and archive all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approach.
Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program; and manage the department’s annual budget.
Develop and mentor the development team; collaborate with the Marketing Director.
At least 5-8 years of proven experience and knowledge in the following:
Annual giving program implementation, including new donor development, renewals, stewardship
Major gift programs and capital campaigns, including prospect research, cultivation, personal solicitation, acknowledgment, and stewardship
Private foundation research, cultivation, program design, and grant writing
Donor communications, including direct mail, newsletters, collateral, and Internet
Contracting and use of consultants
Budgeting, business plan development, report analysis, and performance evaluation
Demonstrate initiative and commitment to achieving and exceeding results.
Perform with grace when under pressure, meet deadlines, and juggle competing priorities.
Highly skilled project management skills with the ability to prioritize and maintain focus on goals.
Communicate with expertise, both orally and with the written word.
Manage staff effectively through annual goal setting, feedback and coaching.
Solve problems creatively.
Possess strong interpersonal skills, political savvy and a sense of humor.
