Onslow County is seeking a Director who is a strong, creative and proactive Parks and Recreation professional to oversee the County’s extensive recreational assets. The County and Department: The County has approximately 1,250 total employees and is organized into 27 departments. The Onslow County Parks and Recreation Department strives to enhance the quality of life of Onslow County citizens through recreation programs, district parks, beach access facilities and an active partnership with the community. The Parks and Recreation Department has a budget of $1.8 million. This department of over 50 is comprised of the Parks and Recreation Director, the Recreation Program Supervisor, the Athletics Program Supervisor, the Parks Superintendent, the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, 2 Parks Operations Officers, 11 Maintenance Workers, 12 Park Attendants, 8 District Coordinators, and 14 seasonal/temporary employees. Bachelor’s degree with coursework in recreation, physical education, public administration, business administration, or related field and six (6) or more years of experience in parks and recreation management including three (3) or more years of supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Local Government/Municipal parks and recreation experience and a relevant master’s degree and CPRP certification are highly preferred. The selected candidate will be required to maintain a driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina. Residency within the County is required.
Onslow County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners who are all elected at-large for four-year terms. The voters approved expanding the Board to seven members with staggered terms beginning in 2018. The Board of Commissioners establishes policies and ordinances that are implemented by the County Manager and County staff.
