The Department Administrator is responsible for the overall management of the administrative, financial, and staff operations for the Philosophy Department. Works with Chair and with other faculty leadership to advise, set, and/or develop policies and procedures concerning a variety of areas, including the structure and execution of the graduate and undergraduate programs, faculty hiring and promotion, public relations, and other areas. Handles all HR responsibilities within the department including management of three direct reports; staff hiring; performance management, reclassifications, salary reviews, and staff training. Provides support and oversight for department committees; prepares faculty appointments; oversees faculty search and promotion efforts and large initiatives such as visits from the external Visiting Committee. Holds fiduciary responsibility for managing department's 25+ gift and endowment funds, each with specific fund terms; advises on spending for department-related programs/initiatives and student fellowships; administers department grants; prepares yearly budgets; approves all department payments. Serves as primary source of policy information for faculty and staff. Acts as liaison to and works closely with FAS and University offices, sometimes partnering with these entities in upgrading spaces, department-wide software programs, department-wide phone upgrades, etc. Regularly trouble shoots and manages/resolves complex and unanticipated issues requiring liaising with HUPD, university ombudsperson, GSAS student services, Office of the Governing Boards, as needed.

Bachelor's degree required with 5+ years of progressively responsible administrative experience including financial management experience.
Three years of experience supervising staff or students strongly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge and interest in higher education delivery and policy; demonstrated leadership experience such as 1) managing projects that require instructing others, delegating responsibilities, financial planning and budget implementation, 2) responding to problems by developing and implementing solutions, 3) awareness of and experience with compliance regulations, 4) recognizing and responding to emergency situations.
Experience in and ability to work well with a wide variety of individuals in diverse university settings; expertise with current office technology and a demonstrated ability to quickly learn complex software programs essential to performing administrative, financial, and management tasks. Experience in a higher education setting desired.
