The Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) at the University of Nebraska is accepting applications for a faculty director position in Plant Phenomics with a 65% research, 15% teaching, and 20% administrative appointment. This will be an associate or full professor, tenured/tenure leading faculty position with potential affiliations with the Department of Agronomy & Horticulture, Biological Systems Engineering, Statistics and/or the School of Natural Resources with dual linkages with the Center for Plant Science Innovation and the Quantitative Life Sciences Initiative. Rank and tenure will be based on experience and credentials of the successful applicant. The position will be hired at either a 12 month year-round or a 9 month academic year position depending on the final applicant’s preference.
The incumbent in this position will develop a nationally recognized, extramurally funded research program and will provide technical and administrative leadership for the University of Nebraska phenomics initiative by engaging and leading effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations focused on multi-scale high throughput imaging techniques to characterize phenotypic traits and variation in plants. The candidate is expected to work closely with plant physiologists, plant breeders and computer scientists, along with quantitative and statistical geneticists to gain insight on the genetic underpinnings governing complex traits of plants and translate this information to aid in bridging the genotype to phenotype gap in crops. We are seeking incumbents who thrive working in collaborative transdisciplinary research and teaching environments and enjoy developing partnerships with peer institutions and industry. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to undergraduate and/or graduate teaching mission(s) and to mentor graduate students and junior researchers. Content and instruction of the teaching component of the position are expected to contribute to the broader mission of development of “T-level” competency of the student, those who are broadly conversant in a variety of research disciplines and specifically trained in curation of image data and its genetic relationships with plant phenotypic traits. Research and leadership responsibilities will be integral to IANR’s newly established Consortium for Integrated Translational Biology (C-ITB), whose mission is to develop computational and predictive models from data sets derived from various `omics’ platforms that link to plant phenotype(s) to genotype. Importantly, the incumbent will seek and establish effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations, including integration with research groups and educational programming. The incumbent is expected to connect with stakeholders, agencies and/or industry partners to strengthen research/educational programmatic themes. The incumbent will effectively obtain and leverage external and internal support (grants, fee revenue, etc.) for research/teaching programming; mentor undergraduate and graduate students; publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed journals; and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities. The incumbent will translate research-based information into learner-centered products. This may include creating scholarly, innovative, and high impact learning programs and tools for on-campus or online educational portals. The incumbent will identify issues and opportunities focused on learner needs and emerging regional and national issues with international relevance, as well as measuring the impact of his/her programs and effectively communicate results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in plant sciences, engineering, data and computational sciences or a related field. Demonstrated experience in plant phenomics and computational and statistical analyses of multi-dimensional sensor and image-based data sets. Evidence of a strong publication record, demonstrated success or potential for obtaining funding, excellent communication skills, experience working and leading multi-disciplinary teams, and leadership skills are required for this position. Applicants are required to have an externally supported research program in the area of interest with sustained research productivity as evidenced by publications in high impact journals and/or patents.
