Ladder Up is an entrepreneurial, innovative nonprofit dedicated to providing free financial services to hardworking Chicagoland families and individuals. Through free tax return preparation, college financial aid application assistance, and financial coaching and education, Ladder Up helps clients access the resources they need to move up the economic ladder. Since 1994, Ladder Up has served more than 297,000 clients and returned an estimated $529 million in economic benefits.
The organization is seeking an interim executive director for the period of November 2017-February 2018, during which time Ladder Up’s executive director will be on maternity leave. You will help ensure continuity and the ongoing success of Ladder Up’s programs, through which the organization serves 16,000 clients and engages 1,000+ volunteers annually. You will have several areas of responsibility:
Staff oversight: You will supervise the daily activities of Ladder Up’s staff of ten people to ensure that the organization is on track to meet or exceed programmatic and fundraising goals. You will provide feedback and guidance to program managers and staff as needed and you will work with the operations manager to address personnel needs as they arise.
Fundraising and development: You will work with the development manager to review and edit all funding reports, proposals, letters of inquiry, and donor correspondence. You will help with prospect research, event planning, sponsor solicitation, and donor cultivation when necessary. You will also work with the bookkeeper to prepare and submit payment requests related to government contracts.
Financial management: You will work with the bookkeeper to ensure the financial health of the organization. You will track revenues and monitor expenses, review bank and credit card statements and reconciliations, and provide updates to the Board on the financial position of the organization.
Board relations: You will interface with the Board on a regular basis to provide financial and programming updates. You will execute Board ideas and initiatives and you will help plan quarterly meetings prepare meeting agendas, follow up with individual members, and respond to requests.
Client service: You will be trained on tax return preparation and will attend Saturday morning tax sessions from January 27-February 24, 2018, to serve as a return preparer/quality reviewer.
Mandatory Job Qualifications
A minimum of 7 years of management/supervisory experience
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Professional demeanor, maturity, and strong interpersonal communication skills
Ability to be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that demands an all-hands-on-deck approach
Strong work ethic
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
