The Division of Global Public Health (GPH) within the Department of Medicine at UCSD aims to conduct high-caliber research on health related issues and service utilization facing populations in international settings, U.S. minorities and migrants to the U.S. GPH promotes research, teaching, service and global health leadership based on the principles of social justice and health equity.
GPH also promotes the development of equal bi-national partnerships with UCSD, other academic institutions and non-governmental organizations. This position seeks project coordination and support for two faculty members in the Division of Global Public Health.
Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Project Manager/Interviewer will serve as research project coordinator for ongoing research studies in the United States and Mexico. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of data collection and qualitative analysis. Conduct qualitative interviews with drug users, veterans, as well as other medically vulnerable community members and related service providers.
Maintain all study-related documents, overseeing database management, managing field staff remotely, preparing and maintaining human subjects' protocols and training manuals in English and Spanish. Make contributions to publications, presentations, reports and research design and grant/manuscript writing. The Project Manager/Interviewer will train and assign work tasks to two research assistants in Ventura and Orange Counties; contribute to the design and modification of qualitative interview guides.
The Project Manager/Interviewer will manage a wide variety of field and networking tasks involving active drug users, county government agencies, and community based organizations that require considerable ingenuity, resourcefulness and flexibility.
Theoretical knowledge generally acquired through a Master's Degree in Public Health or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience overseeing/managing research and/or academic projects which target active drug users.
Proven experience in forming working alliances and building relationships with academic, local government, NGO and other research partners.
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills both oral and written.
Demonstrated experience recruiting and interviewing study participants.
Experience in developing and/or managing qualitative and quantitative survey instruments.
Demonstrated experience working with active drug users from a harm reduction perspective.
Proven knowledge of Institutional Review Board and other federal research policies and procedures.
Ability to read, speak, write, and translate in English/Spanish is highly preferred.
Demonstrated experience in providing skills training to other professionals.
Experience in making original contributions to manuscript preparation and/or grant writing.
Familiarity with biomedical causes of overdose, legal context of overdose in California, and community-level responses to overdose in California.
Must be able to work various hours including evenings & weekends based on business needs.
Must have access to reliable transportation and be willing to travel as necessary.
Must have a valid California driver's license.
Must have a valid passport and be able to travel to Tijuana, Mexico to conduct interviews. Sentri/global entry pass is recommended.
