This position is located within the Medical Surveillance program, a unit of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH) in the Department of Public Health Sciences. The program has 36 state and government contracts, each ranging from $30,000 to $3 million. The core activities of the COEH are to educate future leaders in occupational and environmental health, develop new knowledge, and bring the resources of the University of California to people affected by health hazards in their workplaces or communities. The Physician Assistant serves as team leader and will directly supervise medical surveillance staff while on site at various work locations. The Physician Assistant provides occupational health services such as pre-employment, DMV, Respiratory, Hazardous Materials, and POST physicals, as well as immunizations to meet the health and safety needs of various companies, state and government agencies throughout California. Services are provided by the Physician Assistant and support staff working under the direction of the MD's from the department. Operational direction would come from CHP Manager. Examinations are provided on-site with our mobile medical unit and also subcontracted to various occupational health clinics throughout California.-- Current California PA license, CPR certification.-- Demonstrated medical knowledge to take a complete and accurate patient history. -- Knowledge to perform the appropriate physical examinations. -- Knowledge to document information in problem-oriented charting.-- Medical knowledge to provide preventive medical care. Ability to perform simple laboratory tests and determine abnormalities of laboratory reports.-- Demonstrated skill to use medical knowledge to diagnose common medical conditions and provide adequate patient education.-- Must maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPPA guidelines.-- Must be able to lift and carry up to 40lbs.-- Must obtain certification in spirometry and audiometry testing. - Demonstrates strong written and interpersonal communication skills.-- Demonstrated initiative and ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team; flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing situations in a positive manner. -- Demonstrated skill and ability to work in a high volume, high stress, busy environment and maintain interpersonal effectiveness and professional attitude towards patients and staff. Ability to anticipate problems and recommend changes and determine urgency of situations and react appropriately.-- Must have adequate manual dexterity to lift and move equipment and supplies to and from the mobile clinic or on-site facilities, and to work in a confined area; must be able to hear well enough to interpret sounds through stethoscope; must be able to speak clearly enough to be understood; see well enough for physical assessment.PREFERRED:-- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and NIOSH recommendations.-- NIOSH certification in Spirometry.-- CAHOC certification in Audiometry.-- Knowledge and experience in the field of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.-- Willingness to drive a medical mobile unit (RV).
