Department Summary The University of Oregon Libraries is an essential partner in the University’s educational, research, and public service mission. With five locations on the Eugene campus, and branches at UO Portland and at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, the Libraries offers many flexible, service- and technology-rich environments for our users’ research and learning needs. The University of Oregon Libraries is the only Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member in Oregon. The library is a member of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, Oregon WIN, SPARC, Center for Research Libraries, DuraSpace, the Council on Library and Information Resources, Coalition for Networked Information, EDUCAUSE, and other major organizations. In addition to a full range of research library programs, the UO Libraries provides many of the university's central educational technology services, including learning management system administration, classroom technology support, broadcast-quality video production, distance education delivery, streaming media, educational technology support, and technology-related faculty development and training.
Position Summary Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Assistant Dean, Administrative Services, provides strategic, administrative leadership in the areas of financial management services, facilities management and business services, and human resources management, all of which includes communication and application of related University and library policies and procedures. The Assistant Dean supervises staff and student assistants. She or he may also serve as the Acting Dean in the absence of the Dean and Associate Deans. The position is responsible for responding to the needs of faculty, students, staff, and the public.
This position provides leadership and oversight for assigned areas in the position’s portfolio, but also contributes significant hands-on work related to budget development and management, and library-wide evaluation and assessment. The Assistant Dean directly supervises 2.0 FTE officers of administration and 1.0 FTE classified staff, and is responsible for a total permanent staff of nine, plus several student assistants. The position provides leadership as the administrative sponsor for the Evaluation, Assessment, and User Experience Team, the Library Emergency Preparedness and Response Team, the Student Supervisors Group, the Undergraduate Research Award Committee, and ad hoc working groups as needed. The incumbent also serves as a member of the senior-level Administrative Team and Library Council, and participates in appropriate professional development activities and organizations to stay current with trends and practices in the field, and to meet criteria for promotion and retention.
Minimum Requirements • ALA-accredited MLS or an equivalent combination of education and library experience sufficient for library faculty rank in appointment; • Three years or more of advanced financial, administrative, and management experience; • Five years or more of progressively responsible experience in an academic library or in higher education settings; • Three years or more of supervisory experience.
Professional Competencies • Budget management experience; • Strong skills with computers and office/productivity software; • Excellent organizational and analytical skills; • Excellent oral and written communication skills; and ability to communicate effectively with others.
Preferred Qualifications • Advanced degree in management, accounting, or related fields; • Experience with hands-on financial/budget management using Banner software in higher-education settings; • Experience in government accounting, human resources management, and/or purchasing and contracting.
