Designated nurse leader at the executive level who effectively coordinates and provides authority and functional accountability for the following functions over the Medical Center and Clinic nursing practice: Develops organizational-wide patient care delivery models and/or care programs, policies, and procedures that describe how patients' nursing care needs or patient populations receiving nursing care are assessed, evaluated, and met, develops and implements the care plans for providing nursing care to those patients requiring nursing care, participates with governing body, management, medical staff and clinical leaders in the hospital's decision-making structures and processes, implements an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
Ensures consistent level of nursing care is provided throughout the continuum of care, regardless of location. In addition, this position is responsible for approving and ensuring nursing policies, procedures, and standards describe and guide how the nursing staff provides the appropriate nursing care required by all patients and patient populations served by the hospital. Collaboratively, with the nursing leadership, develops the hospital and clinic plan(s) for providing nursing and patient care, and monitors compliance with such plan(s). This role is responsible for organized nursing services and manages from the perspective of the organization as a whole.
The nurse executive has five primary domains of activity: leading collaborating, integrating, facilitating and evaluating. As the administrator, the nurse executive exercises the authority inherent in the position to fulfill responsibilities to the profession, the health care consumer and the organization. This role provides leadership and vision for the philosophy, development, and advancement of nursing within the organization in particular and for society at large. In doing so, is also accountable for the quality and cost effectiveness of nursing services. Is the chief spokesperson for organized nursing services, and is often the catalyst for integration and collaboration of nursing with other professional disciplines and functional areas in the mutual achievement of client centered and organizational goals.
The individual effectively collaborates with other members of the Executive Management Team in making decisions about services, settings and organizational priorities. Promotes a practice environment that empowers nurses to provide safe, reliable, patient centered nursing care that is effective, compassionate and efficient. The environment is of primary importance in the recruitment and retention of nurses.
QUALIFICATIONS Current license to practice nursing in the State of South Dakota and certification as a Nursing Administrator is desirable. Minimum of ten years experience as a Registered Nurse in a hospital setting. Graduate from AACN or NLN accredited and a state board approved college of nursing with a Bachelors degree in nursing. Master's degree in nursing is required and PhD or DNP preferred.
