The Center for Law, Energy & the Environment (CLEE), based at Berkeley Law, builds on the School’s history of and commitment to research and public service and its leading environmental and energy law and policy programs. CLEE leverages the intellectual resources of Berkeley Law faculty, staff, and students in furtherance of applied scholarship in a variety of environmental and energy law and policy areas. CLEE’s research priorities include combatting climate change, advancing sustainable energy, supporting sustainable land use, addressing water allocation and management challenges, strengthening ocean governance systems, and developing solutions to other pressing environmental law and policy challenges.
CLEE is entirely self-supported, requiring it to raise its annual budget needs through gifts, grants and contracts, and other revenue streams. Therefore we are seeking a highly organized self-starter to fill the role of Development Officer and to help lead this effort. The Development Officer works on specific fundraising programs focused on donor cultivation and research; reports to the executive director; and works in collaboration with the rest of the team to plan, schedule, and implement moderate-sized, comprehensive fundraising and development projects and programs.
The position involves designing, developing, delivering, and administering fundraising programs. The Development Officer identifies new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors; develops materials and marketing plans and organizes related programs/events; and cultivates, stewards, and may solicit donor prospects. •In partnership with the Executive Director, plans, schedules, and implements fundraising and development projects and programs, including specific fundraising programs focused on individual donor cultivation, stewardship of additional foundation support, and potential additional revenue streams. •Key activities include: •Planning, organizing, and directing small- and large-scale fundraising campaigns to support Center activities •Working with other Center staff involved in the implementation of multi-component fundraising programs, including outreach, communications, and event planning •Coordinating information dissemination amongst current and potential supporters, in conjunction with other Center communication strategies •Identifies, cultivates, solicits and/or stewards a pipeline of prospects and donors, using metrics to track activities and provide reports on outcomes. Key constituencies include: •Major gifts prospects and donors •Foundation and prospects and supporters •Corporate and other private prospects and supporters •Others related to additional revenue streams •Builds a comprehensive development plan, with defined milestones and metrics of success, to ensure the Center meets its revenue goals and to support the Center’s engagement priorities. •This includes planning related to fund development, annual solicitation programs, and other revenue-generating activities. •Participates in and frequently leads short and long-range strategic planning related to development and fundraising. •Provides analysis of and information about complex results or activities, and makes recommendations to upper management for development of new programs as required. •Designs, organizes, and implements special events.•Thorough working knowledge of and demonstrated success implementing fundraising, donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices. •Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera. •Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives, including skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals/objectives and securing gifts. •Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationship at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies, including through written communications and newsletters. •Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/resolution. •Thorough project management skills. •Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check.
Education/Training: •Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training This is a contract position with a duration of 12 months.
