Potomac State College, part of the West Virginia University system of campuses, is seeking qualified candidates for a Financial Aid Counselor. This position is responsible for providing financial counseling to students, parents, and others interested in student financial aid, and will also assist in the administration of financial aid funds, including the awarding of aid to eligible students.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Assist with counseling students, parents, high school personnel, and others regarding financial aid programs offered by federal, state, private, and institutional sources.
Explain financial aid consequences when students are withdrawing from college or when they are not making satisfactory academic progress.
Assist with administering student aid funds and perform final review of aid applications and awards.
Review, interpret, and ensure compliance with over 7,000 student aid regulations.
Continually monitor ever-changing rules, regulations, policy bulletins, and statutes from the Federal and State Government, other external agencies, and West Virginia University (WVU).
Process additional unsubsidized loan requests that are sent to the Potomac State College (PSC) Enrollment Services Office and package academic year students on an as-needed basis or repackage after documentation of outside aid has been received or after verification.
Package enrolled summer and study abroad students as needed.
Review rosters and post awards for DC tuition assistance grant programs (DCTAG) for all three WVU campuses.
Administer consortium agreements for students at other institutions who are taking PSC classes or PSC students taking classes at other institutions.
Deliver financial aid presentations and assist with Enrollment Services events for new and returning students, including, but not limited to, open houses, PSC Orientations, FAFSA Workshops, and Student Services Days.
Travel to college fairs and high school presentations to represent WVU and PSC.
Work Hours: 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
At least one (1) year of direct experience in financial aid at a post-secondary institution preferred. Significant experience with tax preparation or other financial areas may be substituted.
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered
Experience with a computerized financial aid management system
Excellent management/administrative skills
Effective and professional communication skills, both written and verbal
Good math and analytical skills
Valid driver's license
