Economic Mobility Pathways (EMPath), a Boston-based national non-profit organization helping low-income participants achieve economic independence and helping other organizations to do the same, is seeking a Vice President of Institutional Advancement. This position is responsible for overall leadership of the organization’s fundraising and communications, is a member of the organization’s Executive Leadership Team, and reports directly to the President/CEO.
EMPath operates on a $12 million annual budget with 120 employees. It provides services at numerous sites throughout Boston and has administrative offices located at One Washington Mall, Government Center, Boston. It is known as an organization developing next generation evidence-based economic mobility tools and approaches and then scaling them through an innovative national and international network of more than 70 government and non-profit providers in the US and five other countries. Its cutting-edge work has been recognized by the White House; federal, state, and local governments; The World Bank; foundations such as Gates, Kresge, and Annie E. Casey; Sesame Street in Communities, and many others.

Vice President of Institutional Advancement
As mentioned above, the Vice President of Institutional Advancement (VP of IA) reports to the President/CEO and serves on the organization’s Executive Team, the primary group providing strategic and operational oversight to the organization. The VP of IA also works directly with the Board of Directors in the design and implementation of all fundraising and external communications efforts. The role manages a team of three staff that is responsible for designing and executing a comprehensive set of development activities contributing to raising nearly $2 million annually in general operating and capital support.
EMPath’s fundraising portfolio currently includes direct appeals, major gifts, planned giving, and an annual fundraising reception. It also oversees all aspects of organizational communications and public relations including website, social marketing, publications, and media. It contributes to grants procurement and reporting and oversees the management of grant-funder relations. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional with a proven track record in managing all aspects of development and external relations. The V.P. of IA should have solid experience in developing and implementing a comprehensive advancement strategy with an emphasis on donor cultivation and major gifts. They should also be comfortable and effective in working directly and discretely with high level volunteer leadership.
Although EMPath seeks to find an experienced fundraising professional, the organization is also open to candidates who have had related experience, such as relationship-based sales, or business development in the for-profit sector.
The V. P. of IA should possess both the vision and ability to accurately and compellingly present complex information about EMPath and its priorities to a variety of internal and external audiences. The role requires an energetic and entrepreneurial leader who can juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced innovative environment, and direct, motivate and develop professional staff. Finally, this leader will relish cultivating and stewarding strong and cooperative working partnerships with other EMPath staff, Board members, major donors and prospects, corporations, foundations, and non-profit partners, and have the presence and stature to engage the highest levels of leadership in these entities.

In order to be eligible for this position, candidates should possess at least a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree is preferred. Successful applicants should have no less than five to ten years’ progressive management experience (preferably in fundraising, but relationship-based sales or program development will also be considered) culminating in senior-level experience. Considerable and demonstrated success in leading fundraising efforts including experience cultivating and soliciting gifts and grants (or sales) of 6-7 figures or more. Experience and relationships with national foundations and major philanthropists is a plus.
