Position Summary: The Campagna Center is embarking on a new effort to launch an Early Learning Center that will serve as a teaching and learning laboratory that informs its approach to early childhood education across its early childhood program offerings. Currently Campagna Center early childhood programs reach over 500 children under five across Alexandria. This new Center will also work closely with faculty at Northern Virginia Community College to provide a learning lab for students pursuing credentials, certifications, and degrees in early childhood education, with the possibility of a future joint faculty arrangement.
The Director must bring an entrepreneurial mindset to the position based on the current business model that includes a subsidized and fee-based component to provide early childhood education for 50 children. The Director will also work in concert with two additional early childhood directors and the Chief Program Officer to ensure that lessons learned through this learning laboratory are integrated across our early childhood programs. This newly created Early Learning Center will provide an opportunity to enhance the quality and visibility of our early childhood work in the City of Alexandria. The new Director must be deeply committed to teacher training and development, creative problem solving, and working in a collaborative manner to achieve project goals.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
Start-Up & Program Development
Establishes an Advisory Committee that supports the work of the Early Learning Center;
Determines the classroom layout and material needs in anticipation of Fall 2018 opening;
Works with consultant team engaged in landscape analysis and outreach to large employers to inform recruitment plan for the Center;
Works with Northern Virginia Community to frame approach to supporting students matriculating at the college in a certificate or degree program;
Recruits and hires staff, based as program scales up with enrollment; and
Develops a marketing and outreach plan informed by landscape analysis to support enrollment.
Establishes the curriculum and assessment framework that guides the provision of early learning experiences for all children;
Fosters an understanding of using data to support individualized experiences for all children; and
Sets the framework for establishing effective relationships with families individually and collectively.
Creates and nurtures relationships with employment partners that see the center as a resource to providing early care and education to its employees;
Serves as primary liaison for all Partnership agreements – responsible for ensuring agreements are current, and reflect the evolving needs of the program; and
Maintains a visible presence in the field and seeks to bring best practices and agency successes to the forefront at local, state, and national conferences.
Professional Development & Training
Oversees the process for creating and implementing our professional development plan and is responsible for managing the process associated with implementing training that addresses staff needs; and
Works with Human Resource Director as new staff are hired to ensure the best candidates are selected.
Finance, Administration, & Governance
Ensures enrollment meets business model requirements
Manages Center financial resources – reviews monthly financial with Controller, works with Chief Financial Officer to develop annual operating budget, presents all department expenditures for approval;
Participates in proposal development for new funding opportunities with Development staff; and
Participates in regular cross department organizational meetings.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Master’s Degree in early childhood education; significant experience managing large early childhood programs; experience leading start-up efforts preferred. Knowledge NAEYC accreditation; and Quality Improvement Rating System; local/state child care licensing regulations.
Proven leadership capabilities with strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse individuals; open-minded and willing to critically consider multiple perspectives as operational decisions are made
Transparent management style –able to establish trust and credibility with program staff at all levels
Resourceful, creative and excellent problem-solving skills, coupled with the ability to demonstrate reflective thinking skills
Proven ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
Financially astute with the ability to develop budgets and effectively manage/leverage financial resources and read financial reports
Excellent verbal communications skills (as evidenced by public speaking experience) and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively
Strong reflective supervision, administration and management skills
Sound judgment, professionalism and a positive attitude
