Michigan State University’s International Studies Program seeks a seasoned entrepreneur and master trainer to support its Youth Empowerment Programs as Senior Innovation Officer. Throughout its fifty plus years history, MSU’s International Studies and Programs division has provided leadership to facilitate cross-college and cross-content research and project collaborations. Such collaborations, over time, have resulted in a strong network of strategic partners on the ground in countries facing the world’s most pressing problems.
MSU is poised to expand its research, outreach and overall global footprint in the area of youth entrepreneurship and job creation. Working closely with the Assistant Dean for the MasterCard Foundation Scholars and Youth Empowerment Programs, the SIO will cultivate a global network of entrepreneurs, implementing agencies, government officials, corporations, foundation donors and investors committed to youth education, entrepreneurship and leadership. He/she should be an accomplished motivator and mentor, an effective manager of people, and a visionary leader who has a proven record of accomplishment in successfully implementing comprehensive youth development programs. The SIO will have three main job functions:
I. Developing and Mentoring Entrepreneurs (50%) In this role, the SIO will:
Provide foundational entrepreneurship training for MasterCard Foundation Scholars and other students at MSU and beyond.
Serve as a resource for stage zero and stage one entrepreneurs seeking to start or scale their ventures.
Develop and maintain a network of support for young entrepreneurs across the globe
Manage YEP Regional Coordinators who are actively linking youth with employment and business and social entrepreneurship opportunities
II. Event Planning(25%) The SIO will be responsible for all events hosted by YEP at the MSU campusand sites across the globe. Specific functions under this job element include:
Coordinate guest speakers and participants for monthly capacity building webinars, quarterly youth conferences and annual Youth to Youth summits.
Facilitate training workshops for young entrepreneurs (both virtual and in person).
Manage the YEP HALL of FAME - faculty advisors mentors and educators appreciation events
III. PartnershipDevelopment (25%) The SIO will be responsible for new business development and should have substantive experience with individual and institutional fundraising. In this role, the SIO will:
Assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive communications plan to inform partners and identified markets about the mission, vision, and goals of YEP, its programs and priorities, and opportunities for support.
In coordination/collaboration with ISP Advancement office, develop funding priorities and projects that benefit YEP.
Actively engage supporters of youth focused programs, including alumni, parents, corporations, educators and governments to understand and collaborate on the shared goals of fostering youth empowerment and leadership.
Gather and share useful feedback from various internal and external constituencies to help ensure excellent strategic planning and tactical execution of YEP programs.
The SIO will report to and work closely with the Assistant Dean for the MasterCard Foundation Scholars and Youth Empowerment Programs to ensure that ISP’s Youth Empowerment Program achieves its strategic objectives. This includes providing support for stage zero and one entrepreneurs, conducting needs assessments for programs, organizing events and developing strong contacts to support and grow Youth Empowerment Programs.
The successful candidate should have a significant record of accomplishment working with global partners (including corporations, governments, academic institutions and major national and international foundations).
Masters -Business Administration, Public Relations
Minimum Requirements (Amended)
A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Relations, Marketing, International Relations or International Development Communications is preferred.
Personal experience as an entrepreneur.
Demonstrated experience operating within multiple cultural contexts.
Experience in related fields such as public relations, business administration or marketing.
Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal and written/oral communications.
Extensive domestic and international travel required.
Eight years of successful fundraising experience with individual and institutional donors (preferably in higher education).
Experience living abroad is highly desirable.
At least five years at a director or manager level.
Fluency in French, Portuguese, Spanish or other international language.
