JOHN BROWN UNIVERSITY, private, evangelical and Christian, seeks a full-time choral conductor and music educator beginning July 1, 2018. Responsibilities include conducting choral ensembles (domestic and international travel is probable); teaching courses in conducting, choral techniques, and music education; mentoring student conductors; choral/vocal recruiting for the Department of Music & Theatre; oversight of the Music Education degree program including supervision of student teachers. This position serves as the liaison between the music education program and the JBU Department of Education and also as the music education liaison with the Arkansas Department of Education. Teaching applied lessons and/or additional courses will be determined based on areas of expertise and experience as well as the needs of the department. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to academic advising of students, participation in departmental governance, performance at appropriate public events, and service on university committees.
The Department of Music and Theatre resides within the Division of Communication and Fine Arts and offers courses leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Music Education. These courses provide a well-rounded education for those wishing to enter the music profession as artists, teachers, supervisors, church musicians, and musicians in other fields. The program in music is closely allied with work in Bible, liberal arts, and technological departments, providing students majoring outside the department of music the opportunity to study music electively or as a minor.
An earned doctorate in choral conducting or music education is preferred, master’s degree required. A current public school teaching license, experience teaching in a secondary public school setting, and background in vocal and instrumental music education are preferred. Experience integrating technology into Music Education training as well as knowledge of Orff, Kodaly and Dalcroze techniques is helpful, as is expertise in a secondary area; suggested areas include instrumental music, private voice, and aural skills training. Teaching experience in higher education, evidence of scholarly potential, and a commitment to Christian higher education are essential. Demonstrated interest in and commitment to a multi-faceted music program within the context of a liberal arts education is necessary.
