The Department of Pathology at the University of Iowa Health Care is currently accepting applications for a Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Scientist opening. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified individuals seeking to work in a fast paced learning environment within our Anatomic Pathology – Histology Laboratory.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of laboratory procedures that may involve numerous detailed steps and techniques that require the use of professional judgment, which are used to provide information in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Perform histologic testing on tissue specimens, which provide the pathologist with information for the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of disease.
This position is primarily 1st shift, between 3:30 AM and 12:00 PM, Monday-Friday, with rotating on-call weekends.
Position will be filled as Medical Lab Technician (MLT) or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) based on the selected candidates qualifications. The beginning salary for the Medical Lab Technician (MLT) is $41,970 and the beginning salary for the Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is $45,372.

MLT: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution, OR Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or eligible from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA), OR Successfully completed an official US military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) is required.
MLS: A Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution.
MLT & MLS: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
MLS: 6 months – 1 year clinical histology or anatomic pathology laboratory experience, which may include program training experience is required.
MLS: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.
MLT: Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is highly desirable. Certified Histotechnician or Histotechnologist, and/or completion of an accredited histotechnology program is desired. Experience with tissue embedding, tissue processor maintenance and special stains is desirable.
MLS: Graduate of accredited histology program is desired. Histology, frozen section and neuropathology experience is highly desired. Experience with tissue embedding, tissue processor maintenance and special stains is desirable.
