We are seeking a Systems Engineer, specifically, a System-of-Systems (SoS) Engineer, to join a team of scientists, engineers, and technologists contributing to the safe and efficient realization of scientific objectives on the Z Machine. While opportunities to engage in myriad problems across Center 01600 exist, the principal focus of the selected individual will be the performance and continued improvement of the Z SoS as an important and dynamic scientific enterprise based around a one-of-a-kind facility. This role presents opportunities for sustaining and developing highly complex technical systems, engaging customers and stakeholders in the sustainment and improvement of multi-disciplinary systems, and ensuring the highest level of safety in all operations.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Team with others to study the Z Collaborative SoS
Observe and interact with participants and constituent systems
Study, coopt, and develop SoS engineering methods as necessary to enable more holistic understanding and analysis of: stakeholders, values/goals, constituent systems, boundaries, constraints, interfaces, and implicit and explicit metrics and expectations
Identify, create, and implement descriptive analyses and non-prescriptive tools that foster stronger communication between and encourage cooperation of the SoS participants, ultimately enabling more efficient, scalable, and robust distributed planning and execution of scientific experiments at Z
Engage with all and sundry teams that comprise Z planning and execution on a regular basis to aid in the successful execution of well-formed plans according to the desired timelines and schedules
Form and propagate a common understanding of the overall shot planning and execution processes amongst all participants to enable broader engagement, more cohesive teaming among varied participants, and more efficient and effective execution
Construct and implement novel approaches to observation and measurement of system-level properties of interest to diverse stakeholders with significantly different backgrounds and competencies
Interact with teams of scientists, engineers, and technologists across a wide range of disciplines throughout Center 01600 to design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes and systems through basic and applied research
Bachelor’s AND Master’s degree in a STEM discipline
Two years’ professional experience
Experience with computer programming and collaborative software development, including version control software
Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance
Experience with System-of-Systems (SoS) engineering problems, following the DoD Wave Model or equivalent SoS engineering methods
Multidisciplinary technical knowledge (e.g., physics, engineering, modeling and simulation, etc.) and competencies conducive to ready teaming in the position
Experience working in large-scale scientific research facilities and with large-scale scientific datasets
Experience with applied statistics for sociotechnical systems as well as experience with exploratory and predictive data analysis, including data wrangling, conditioning, evaluation of veracity, and effective presentation
Experience in multi-stakeholder design problems and multi-stakeholder negotiations
Familiarity with research in socio-technical systems engineering
Familiarity with research in the philosophy of technology
Experience with D3, R, Pandas, or similar packages
Experience in systems thinking and/or systems dynamics
Experience developing ASP.NET applications with SQL server
Experience with web-based programming, modeling and simulation (e.g., NetLogo, Arena, ExtendSim), model-based systems engineering (e.g. Vitech CORE), and/or LabVIEW
Experience in operations research and industrial engineering
Excellent speaking, writing, and presentation skills
Department 01679, Z Pulsed Power & Systems, is responsible for the Z pulsed power driver capability in service of national High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) science programs. The department is composed of a team of scientists, engineers, and technologists working together to provide responsible stewardship of this important national asset.
In addition to the responsibilities for the Z pulsed power driver, Department 01679 is intimately involved with the concept of operations underlying the use of the Z facility as a unique scientific capability.
