The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) is a national center for advanced science and engineering research and development and education. APL has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Mechanical Engineer.
The Ocean Engineering department at APL excels at ocean engineering design and field operations support for ambitious basic and applied research programs. Ocean Engineering has earned a national reputation for quality at-sea engineering, research diving, and instrument design and fabrication through its half-century long service to APL-UW scientists, the University of Washington, other research organizations, and the U.S. Navy.
The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design, construction and field deployment of mechanical systems for deployment in challenging marine environments. Design tasks will be varied and may range from structural frames and pressure vessels to electronics chassis and hydraulic systems.
The job will entail work in the following areas: Design/Analysis -Design, analysis, and electrial/mechanical integration of power take-off technology for distributed generation systems. -Instrumentation and techniques for performance evaluation of current-stream and wave energy converters -Dynamic Systems Modeling and Control -Hardware design using SolidWorks & Stress and thermal analysis using both ANSYS FEA and empirical equations
Fabrication/Assembly -Coordination with in-house technicians, and machine shop for the fabrication, assembly and testing of mechanical and power system hardware and instrumentation
Field Work -At-sea operation of systems, including deployment and recovery of systems and instruments
In all phases and areas of work: -Directs, coordinates and reviews the work of a small staff of engineers, scientists and technicians.
Doctoral Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Seven or more years of job-related experience. Six years of experience with mechanical and ocean engineering design. Experience with mechanical computer-aided design tools. Must be capable of working at sea in small to large vessels for extended periods of time, and willing to perform such duties. Ability to work independently, and as part of a research team, interacting cooperatively with people from diverse (worldwide) backgrounds and academic levels. Must be US Citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining a Department of Defense security clearance.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
